For the first edition of Paving the Way to Paid Dues we feature artist, producer, and emcee; Curtiss King.

Official Curtiss King. Bandcamp. Twitter.

No doubt a quirky vibe from this dude, but don't let his high top fade and plugs fool you. Originally from my hometown, Carson California, now currently residing in the Inland Empire, Curtiss King is a force not to be slept on. King deceivingly simple in some of his versus has the ability to drop lyrical metaphors, similis, along with some relevant non-sense that makes you pause and think, "wow he really dropped that verse over that beat?" Refreshingly raw and inspiringly grimey Curtiss King chronicles his life, struggles, defeats, and triumphs in his songs letting his listeners into the life as the self-proclaimed King. It's hard to listen to him and not feel empowered to stick with your own personal struggles and hustle.

Something that i found unique about Curtiss King is his integration of 90's sitcoms such as Sinbad and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and his 90's high top fade. It is as though he revels in simpler times and quality of artist, music, and media. However, despite his look and integration of "old-school"media Curtiss King states outright that he is, "not vintage or throw back" in his "Can I Vent pt.1" track, and if i've learned anything about people it's that when they tell you who they really are, you Listen. Curtiss King, believe me we're listening. When you throw on any of his work you can feel his hunger for success and his dedication to his craft. If you would like to understand the thoughts and life of this self-proclaimed King listen to "Jet Pack On E" ft. Kenny Wright and "Scumbags" ft. Ab-Soul & Stevie Crooks. It will give you a glimpse how this King has paved his way to Paid Dues.

In celebration of his invitation to rock the stage at the 2012 Paid Dues Independent Hip Hop Festival, Curtiss King has released a new song and video entitled, "Dues.Paid" If you feel what you hear, you can download it for free at Hulkshare, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, and Mediafire.

For the Love of Music,
Queenie
