It's my firm belief that it's quite rare to find another human being that vibrates at either the same frequency as you or at a relative complimentary frequency. Say you're ringing out at C and you come across someone that's at about a G. When you put those together you form a C power chord. One of the most basic and most widely used forms of chordal music that everyone who listens to punk rock and classic rock can relate to. So during a show not too long ago I met a G note. He was a cool dude who was rocking a marvel comics t-shirt and on top of that I was digging the music he was performing. We chit chatted and I was surprised to find out we shared similar tastes in comics, anime, and music. Time traveling to more current dates I find out that I'll be performing at his CD release show. With all these situation unraveling I couldn't help but use this opportunity to do an origin story with this specific artistically inclined character. Both gentlemen are impressive independent artists in their own right however when you put two great minds together you get this impeccable duo. Their collaboration began when Ayomari was featured on TiRon's first mixtape "Ketchup" in early 2009 and three years later this collaboration of musicianship, skill, and talent is set to hit the stage at this years Paid Dues Hip Hop Festival.

Greetings from The BAY AREA! In honor of my spring break spent up here I'd like to welcome you all to our 5th edition of Paving the Way to Paid Dues. For this edition of Paving the Way to Paid Dues we're going to switch it up a bit, we feature our first young woman in our series stationed in the Bay Area, Ms. Kristine Flaherty, more popularly known as K.Flay. You may have heard esoteric voice floating around on youtube or even on stage with some of the most iconic artists of the Hip Hop game such as Ludacris and Snoop Dogg. A one man act K.Flay has written and produced her own work as well as rap and play her guitar. An Illinois native and the proud owner of a double degree from Stanford University in California, no one including herself, anticipated her to fall into music. It was sort of a whim, what started off as her just writing lyrics for a friend down the hall has acclimated into a melding of music that speaks to her unique experience. Some may argue that she is strictly indie dipping into hip hop, or just an electric artist riding the trend wave, but her journey and music is not to be misconstrued as a passing phase. During her years in the Bay Area she became enthralled with Bay Area rap artist E-40 and dabbled around throwing versus out amongst friends, but it was in that exact creative outlet that K.Flay was able to infuse her musical influences of funk, soul, indie, electric and of course her new found fascination with the distinct hip hop sound of the Bay Area, and create eclectic music.

This massive release by Swedish producer Farkas on Walsh's label Biscuit Factory Records is already out on 12" vinyl, but the digital comes out not too long from now on March 26. "Harmless" and "Tribal Dance" have both received plenty of radio play and DJ support from many of the biggest names in the bass music world. "Harmless" is a dark tune with hard hitting dums as well as a sub-bass line and top bass line that sounds anything but...harmless. "Tribal Dance" is a bouncy 140 BPM bass track that will definitely get the dancefloor groovin' and jumping up and down like some kind of...tribal dance.

Anyways, enough with the lame puns. Don't sleep on this release, these tracks make for dancefloor weapons that will get the crowd going and the room rattling!

I've been playing Rx's track "Orbit" over and over for the past 30 min or so. I "discovered" the track through Dubspot's latest video showing a time lapse of their 3rd floor expansion. It took me quite some time to track down the artist online. Rx has been working w/ dubspot professor + dmc champion extraordinaire DJ Shiftee to create some really interesting bass music. The track "Orbit" is from their 2011 release titled, "Space Ace" [Purchase @ Beatport], which was released on Rad Summer.

The forecast for that evening was rain and during the whole drive to the re-opened Music Box/Henry Fonda we couldn't help but think about how late we were and how early it was for a headliner to be performing. The week prior at the Palladium for Laidback Luke's Super You & Me event we arrived around the same time and we caught the second act for a full night's event that would last until 5am. So it was a surprise that as we walked up the Hollywood Blvd steps the sidewalk was completely empty. Sure it was raining, but it was Feed Me right? This show was supposed to be sold out. No matter, as Eccentric and I entered the venue we thought about how we, along with so many concert goers + bass heads, have expressed how much we've missed this venue. The rumble of the infrasonic frequencies underneath your feet is not to be forgotten. Making our way across the various festively dressed St. Patty's day attendants, Feed Me's TEETH lit the entire venue. At this point we knew we were in for a special night...

The boy wonder, Madeon, has done it again. This kid has yet to disappoint. Sure, he only has a total of nine releases, but I'll be dammed if he ever releases something I don't like. To me it's the combination of his attention to detail in conjunction with his insanely catchy melodies/chordal structures. It's not your basic dance tune that's for sure. He really creates a full song around his tracks. If you take all that into account and add the fact that he's ONLY 17, it starts to boggle the mind. What kind of music will this kid create in 5 years time? 10 years time? 20 years time? I honestly don't know. I can't see that far into the future. All I know is the song below is damn good...

And I can't forget the crew from LA HARD, they will be throwing a two day party, the first day with Moombahton , i would highly recommend day one on this, crazy good line up, be prepared to sweat you ass off on the dancefloor for this day. 

Salted Music is throwing a party in downtown Miami, and this one you Don't want to miss literally, miguel migs just kills the dancefloor with smooth house music and plus vocals from Lisa Shaw, which will be even better. take note on this event.

I'm used to hearing blaring horns over fast paced upbeat Ska music. The folks in Rubblebucket seem to incorporate them so well in their style of music. I'm not entirely sure what exactly is their style but I do know it is fun and it is catchy. Their colorful sound makes me imagine nothing short of a great time at one of their shows and the video goes to show that Rubblebucket live is exactly that, a fun great time! I've got to get to the bottom of what their musical influences are sooner or later. I've been meaning to catch them our here in LA the last few times now but haven't made it so i'm excited to hear that they will be back on tour this spring. I purposefully took extra time to synthesize and produce the write up for this album. I wanted to ensure that that the caliber of work that your about to read only did the album as much justice as possible before you, my good people reading this, would listen to this incredible album for yourself. Funny thing about this album was it's timing; I remember standing outside the KPFK radio station after our "Love Chords" broadcast talking with Glockz and Microphone about the downfall of R&B and Soul like it was the fall of the Byzantine empire. We reminisced on "old school" tracks and artisits like, Tevin Campbell's "Can We Talk," New Edition, and Mint Condition. We talked about the lack of musicianship and quality contributions in recent R&B and Soul. With the anticipated and triumphant return of artist D'angelo to the music scene we all agreed and expect that great R&B and Soul will make a return as soon as D'angelo begins producing new music. But with the release of BJ The Chicago Kid's "Pinapple Now-Laters" album, it looks like we won't have to wait on D'angelo to bring the R&B and Soul back to it's glory days.

Tonight two of my current + favorite producers coming out of the scene make their way to Orange County. We have Hard Rock Sofa coming all the way from Russia with their hard hitting electro type synthesis. You might of hard one of their many productions created along with Swanky Tunes such as their take on The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog", or their remix of Swanky Tunes track "Together". Both of which have in one point in time ended up in a dj set of mine. Along with HRS hails South East Asia's prince of house, Angger Dimas. Having studied under Laidback Luke through the LBL forums, Angger Dimas has shared his take on tracks ranging from the likes of Avicii, Calvin Harris, Coldplay, and Kelis. Shout outs to Manni Dee representing the Brighton sounds over and across the pond. Manni has been an early supporter of Dank Radio and we're really glad at the rate of not only his musical growth, but his ever expanding cv of favorite artists he's performed with. We always knew he was going places. It's just a matter of time until he makes his way down to Southern California so we can have a proper show/Dank Radio live mix. But until that happens the mix below will have to be suffice. It features a handful of forthcoming tunes of his which will be released on the likes of Hit & Hope and Raised By Records. Interesting thing to note is Manni's evolution from his previous musical creations which mirrored more Brainfeeder / Low End Theory type vibes into his more 150 bpm and beyond juke type rhythms. Just right when I thought that I would never ever want to hear Avicii's track "Levels" ever again, Harvard Bass makes his own batch of horchata that cures the sour taste we've grown to experience from hearing the track over and over and again. His bootleg keeps things simple and straight to the point. Those of us who favored the chord progressions may seem a bit disappointed. While those of us who were tired of the progression will sing hallelujah and rejoice. Either way it's a must have for your dj crate. It shows off your excellent digital crate digging skills and it'll keep those annoying requests at bay. Gracias Harvard Bass! #paritaim

Cypress Hill SmokeOut Festival 2012 [Concert Review]

SmokeOut festival a full day of celebrating music and that magical herb that cures all ailments. This was my first trip to the festival but not to the NOS center so I already expected the traffic which gave me the perfect opportunity to mentally prepare for the event. What i didn't expect was the ease of finding parking and effecientcy at the gate that led to the Buddah Garden. I was in line for about 5 minutes before I knew it I was inside the garden surrounded by an eclectic crowd of smokers sitting in hammocks, couches, and lawn chairs rolling and packing various devices. After spending some time in the smokers paradise trading pleasantries I made my way into the festival. I was pretty late and missed alot of the acts i wanted to see like Mobb Deep Fashawn and Currency but I was still excited to see Daedelus and Korn.

Big ups to the local producer/dj Blankface for informing me of this upcoming event [+ putting me on his artist guest list ;)] occurring later on tonight down in Orange County at Yost Theater. He'll be performing upstairs from 10pm - 11pm with an onslaught of original deep dubstep productions while the likes of Mister Blaqk and Bones (GottaDanceDirty) get the main stage crowd ready for Brodinski. Brodinski's first release on Bromance Records featured two tracks that use almost in every DJ set of mine. The first track is one of his own titled "Let the Beat Control Your Body" which features Los Angeles' very own Louisahhh!. It's one of the very few techno tracks I can get away with spinning on a main floor occupied by top 40 heads. The other track on that same release is by another talented producer/dj, Gesaffelstein, titled "Control Movement". I've been following Brodinski's mixes + productions for a while now and am quite excited to finally see him in action. Like me, he is a lover of hip hop music and has a tendency to start off certain mixes w/ heavy doses of pelvic thrusting hip hop gangster classics. See you on the dancefloor.

Above you finally get to see what Native Instruments' latest toy, F1, is all about. With a wonderful turntablism exhibition by DJ Shiftee and MC Greg Nice you get a feel for what direction NI is taking live performance. I'm not going to weigh in on the whole digital vs. analog debate. That whole thing is just like a snake eating it's own tail. All I'll say is that every martial artist has come to the same conclusion of their own expressive battle form, regardless of style, and I paraphrase, "The only thing that matters is a warriors skill set and their own mastery of their mind." Whenever Tommie Sunshine releases a new free download on his Soundcloud page it's like Christmas morning all over again. A handful of his bootlegs/edits have become some of my personal dj secret weapons. People always ask me what the track is or who did the remix/bootleg and I just smile and tell them it's all online. I was THIS close to doing the same thing w/ the track below, but it's just too good to hoard all to myself. Here Tommie teams up with Brooklyn Fire's Dan Aux to remix the already dance ready track Hells Bells. I can't wait to throw this track in one of my upcoming dj gigs. I'm almost certain once that kick hits them they're going to be dancing + smiling + clapping the whole track through. So don't bookmark the track and save it for a later download. For those of you who have just joined us recently on Dank Radio, you may not know, but we're all big fans and supporters of Jakwob. We've featured a hip hop mix of his on Dank Radio + Feature Interview on the site + Concert Review at Cinespace. What you don't know is that we've all been patiently waiting for a release from his own record label Boomting Recordings. Cue in Etherwood, Jakwob's guitarist for his live show as well as Drum & Bass producer extraordinaire. His latest release titled The Foundations EP [Download here or @ Boomting]will satisfy any and all late night thirsts for liquid drum & bass. The first track "Spoken" sets the mood perfectly as the sun slowly rises through my window this morning. If this is Jakwob's way of setting the tone for what's to come, we gladly wait for more.

With a little bit of luck and a whole lot of persistence we were able to secure access to Laidback Luke's first Los Angeles presentation of his Super You & Me Party at the Hollywood Palladium. These infamous comic book dance events have been thrown primarily across the pond in many European cities. With less then a week leading up to the event I had to figure out the best person to contact for media access. Who better to ask then to ask Luke? So I tweeted him and he responded with who to contact. Who would of thought it was going to be that simple? [Sometimes the best way to break into this whole web of music industry personalities is to start w/ your favorite artist.] After a handful of tactful e-mail exchanges with a key emphasis of "If you tell us that same night of the event, even if it is a couple hours right before the doors open, we'll drive up to LA to review the show", we were in. Formerly a heavy jerkin rapper, TayF3rd proves to have evolved into a bigger and badder entity in the hip hop game. Ask anyone who’s got their ears to the streets, TayF3rd holds it down for Eastside Long Beach, if you don't believe me, listen to his mix tapes entitled "Sand Box" and "I Am Long Beach," that will put all qualms to rest. Perceivably charismatic and possessing an insatiable hunger for life, living and thriving. Despite his long hair TayF3rd is both an artist and a business man with an aptitude for the streets. His music and work reflect nothing less than his mastery of both attributes. TayF3rd continues to make music with an undeniable west coast feel. Not to be mistaken with those who came before TayF3rd is an entity all his own. Despite his large following TayF3rd continues to be an allusive rapper whose hard hitting and entrancing music will soon put an end to his anonymity. Throwing on any of his tracks, it becomes difficult to not turn it up and have a good time hitting the hustle or stepping' out. A couple of TayF3rd tracks that need to be give a listen are, "On My Shit," "Mailman Mailman," and "Conceited," Currently TayF3rd is putting in work and making more magic in the studio. Needless to say his new work is much anticipated and with his upcoming performance at Paid Dues 2012 his success will only multiply like the racks he's after. TayF3rd, keep putting on for your city because you've got Strong Beach; the Sand Box standing behind you.

I remember my first encounter with these ninjas like it was yesterday. It was a cold dark night in Los Angeles and I found myself at Ground Zero. As a young ninja myself.. actually as a pre-ninja.. I had no idea what was in store. My older cousin had taken me and my bro Nativity out for some music. Little did I know I would meet this instrumental bass and drum fury head on at this tiny coffee shop at USC. Indo-ninja and Outdo-Ninja were like a tag team of deadly warriors, and masters at their weaponry. With the advanced technology of 2003 the ninjas had incorporated new techniques into their presentation that allowed them to multiply themselves and their soundwaves in true Ninja fashion and completely break down the barriers of reality, melting the faces of all in attendance, literaly. Since then I have been a ninja in training, and have been anxiously anticipating the follow up of their smash LP Bra'ka dOm. Fast forward almost a decade, a tiny little bird tells me that the third and final self-titled Ninja Academy album is ready for the light of day and ready to take over new eardrums all over the planet.
