Lemon Sun - Electric Love [Music Video]

Lemon Sun : Official | Facebook

I believe it was the winter of 2008 when I received a brief but detailed myspace message and email introducing this Los Angeles based band called Lemon Sun. It was when I had time to read every single email and during those days I always hoped something new and exciting would just fall into my lap. They asked for radio play and shared stories of regional tours up and down the California coast. I was intrigued so I pressed play.

The songs were from their previous release titled Run With The Faithless. It was catchy, familiar, and had choruses that etched it's way into my mind. The vibe of the tunes were from an era passed but it was definitely something current that I had to see for myself. And so I trekked up to Los Angeles to check out this band that kept on asking for radio play. To my surprise they were very down to earth. Their performance was solid. I couldn't wait to share this with the rest of the crew and all of our listeners throughout the airwaves.

Fast forward a couple years. Haven't seen Rob and the rest of the guys in a while but from the looks of the video below they haven't let off any steam what so ever. If they ever make their way to your favorite music venue make sure you check them out. Tell them I sent you...

Tour Dates:
2/09 Acoustic show w/ Ferraby Lionheart @ Satellite (Spaceland) in LA (Silverlake), CA
3/05 Rob & Pat Acoustic show @ Blue Moon Lounge in Glendale, CA

Jake Shimabukuro - Bohemian Rhapsody [Live Video]

Jake Shimabukuro : Official | TED.com

Sometimes you just need a relaxing tune to help unwind the day. I think I've been staring at a computer screen for 12+ hours. Starting to go a bit loony if you know what I mean. So it was a very nice surprise that I stumbled upon this on my Facebook feed. I honestly don't remember who posted it but whoever you are, thank you. This is what I needed. And I'm sure you wouldn't mind listening to something a bit more mellow for a change. Enjoy...

Robots & Angels Present: Bomb Zombies + Thavius Beck + 2mex + Rahfee Zahkee 1|20|11 [Concert Review]

Robots & Angels [Official | Facebook | Twitter] @ Blue Cafe

Robots & Angels returned to the Underground of Blue Cafe for another night of quality music. But on this night the focus was shifted on not so much the traditional band but more of the contemporary producer and lyricist. Having two of the residents from the hallowed Low End Theory come down to Long Beach was surely a treat. DJ Nobody and MC Nocando both talented artists on their own right combined like Goku and Vegeta to form Bomb Zombies. We were also treated by bass bumping beat focused set by the locally based and internationally traveled Ableton sensei Thavius Beck. Unfortunately Jon Wayne was unable to perform due to illness but luckily for us 2mex was able to step in and fill the lyrical void. And to round off the night of beats emulating from computerized contraptions was Rahfee Zahkee...

Robots & Angels Present: Free Moral Agents + Physical Forms + Wild Pack Of Canaries + Rahfee Zahkee 1|13|11 [Concert Review]

Robots & Angels [Official | Facebook | Twitter] @ Blue Cafe

It was a calm and cool evening in downtown Long Beach that set the stage for the re-birth of not only the Pine Ave scene but for a group of organizers as well. Robots & Angels started the year off proper with a showcase of amazing local talent. It was here in the Blue Cafe's Underground where the sounds of Wild Pack of Canaries [Mountain Man Records] + Physical Forms [Busdriver's new band] + Free Moral Agents [Ikey from The Mars Volta] + Rahfee Zahkee brought together people from other bands, venues, and party circles. The energy was steadily growing at the start with Rahfee's unique dj performance and the good times just kept on expanding as the night went on...

White Denim & Imoni Present: The Commotions 1|8|11 [Concert Review]

The Commotions : Official | Facebook | Twitter

Apologies for the lateness of this review. 2011 has definitely started off with a new type of craziness and it's taken me the whole month to finally adjust to close to little or no sleep and lots of fun projects with impending deadlines. Here goes my thoughts for the show that night...

The Commotions are a fun, catchy, and tap your foot while you sway and smile kind of happy. Vocalist Marianne and guitarist Reuben traded call and response choruses that made me wish I knew the lyrics for all the songs. They performed a majority of the tracks from their most recent self titled release. While the crowd was teased to dance during the song "Soul Pop" they definitely showed their skankin' moves during "Licorice". All in all it was a good show for a good crowd. The only thing that was missing from their performance that night was some sort of keys or synths to really accentuate key chorus progressions.

Beyond Wonderland 2011 [Caterpillars Garden: Line Up]

Beyond Wonderland : Official | Caterpillars Garden | Tickets

So I've been feeling pretty sick this whole week because of a combination of lack of sleep, long school hours, overpriced food on campus, and being around other sick people, but finding out the drum & bass/dubstep stage line up for Beyond Wonderland 2011 got me stoked (not to mention also feeling a little better about being sick)! For those of you who don't know, Beyond Wonderland is a music festival held in San Bernadino, CA by Insomniac Events, which many people in the electronic music scene in North America would know, are responsible for such events like Nocturnal, Audiotistic, Together As One (on New Year's Eve) and the more well-known and famous Electric Daisy Carnival.

The confirmed line-up for the Caterpillars Garden (dubstep/drum&bass/bass music stage) as of right now is:

Infrasonics – Volume 6

My schedule for school sucks, but for some reason, I'm still stoked for this semester. What does school have to do with this Infrasonics post? I have 4-5 hour breaks from Monday to Thursday and so I just have way too much time and one of the things I choose to do on that long break is...eat...and also, write this post. Anyways, let's continue on with some tracks for this week.

Caspa – Neck Snappah [Purchase: Beatport – Exclusive]

Here's a big track from Caspa, just released two days ago, it's the first release from Sub Soldiers for the year and for a few months now considering their last release was Caspa's Love Never Dies – Back For The First Time EP which included "Geordie Racer" featuring Sub Scape. Anyways, this track has a huge sub bass along with that heavy wobble that is akin to tracks by Skream (check out "Wibbler" and "WTF" by Skream to see what I'm talking about) along with punchy drums that hit as hard as the bassline.

dBridge / Instra:mental – From The Start / Detuned Heart [Purchase: Bleep | Juno | Beatport]

I really enjoy a lot of the stuff that dBridge and Instra:mental release just because their tracks sound minimalistic while at the same time having a huge atmosphere to work with that fills your ears with just the right amount of bass, reverberated drums with a lot of swing on it, and ambient pads to fill out the space. If you're big on more of the ambient/atmospheric sounding drum and bass, be sure to check this release out and also their Fabriclive release.

Various Artists – Pure Dubstep (unmixed tracks + continuous DJ mix by DJ Darkside) [Purchase: Juno | Beatport]

Just thought I'd put this release on here because I just picked it up a few days ago on Juno Download and I'm totally diggin' 20 tracks that come with this compilation. Plus, the DJ mix by DJ Darkside that comes with this is a pretty enjoyable 49 minute listen. It features more of the darker, what many people call "real dubstep" and it was definitely worth the 10 dollars I spent to download this in FLAC.

Phillysoundsystem – Can You Feel

I know I covered Phillysoundsystem in the last post, but I thought I would put this up because he just uploaded this track 2 days ago. I saw this track while browsing through my Soundcloud tracks feed for people that I'm following, and since I really enjoy this guy's productions and releases, I just thought I'd share another. This track has a vocal hook throughout with some guitar riffs and I know that I would drop this track in one of my sets. The build ups just get you up there and when the drops come, that's where the hands go up and the heads start bobbing (or headbanging, if that's how you roll). Check out Phillysoundsystem's Soundcloud for more sick dubstep and grime tracks.

Enjoy!

Free Moral Agents - Dennis Owens [Feature Interview & Tour Dates]

Official | Facebook | Twitter

It seems like I've been seeing Free Moral Agents around town a whole lot these past couple months. I did a review on their show with LBPP.net back in December and I keep running into Dennis at local events. So much so that I brought up the idea of interviewing him for Dank Radio. I always wanted to know how he got involved with the band and how many projects he's involved with and how he keeps them all in order. Not only were my questions answered but he even shared some info on how their upcoming show with Yann Tiersen at The Luckman Fine Arts Complex came to be...

Nativity: First off, a big thank you for taking the time to do this for us Dennis. You and I met not too long ago at a local show where you were spinning some really great non-conventional [in a good way of course] records. And later down the line I discovered you played bass in Free Moral Agents and you also work at the local record shop Fingerprints. Can you please shed some light on who you are to our readers? How did you become involved with Ikey[The Mars Volta] and his project Free Moral Agents? And more importantly how do you keep track of all of your projects?
Dennis: Looks like you already got some of the basics covered! In addition to what you just mentioned, I also promote and deejay a night here in Long Beach called The Good Foot. It happens every 2nd Friday of the month at a club called Que Sera. I also promote and deejay a night called Space Is The Place Rollerdisco. It's every 4th Saturday of the month at a venue called World On Wheels in L.A. I started playing in Free Moral Agents back in May of 2004. Ikey called me up one day and asked me if I wanted to jam with him and the rest is history. How do I keep track of everything? Um.....I guess I have a good memory! It's not that difficult, really.

Nativity: Sounds like a lot of time management skills are necessary. Speaking of time. Free Moral Agents just finished up a week of amazing local shows. Spanning the home of Low End Theory at The Airliner, to local intimate saloon The Prospector, and to the latest underground venue to make itself known on Pine ave, The Blue Cafe. How has the reception been? Are you guys seeing an increasing growth of attendees? Do you see more and more people singing along to the songs?
Dennis: The reception at our recent local shows was great! It seems like more people are getting into what we're doing.

Nativity: Great performance at The Blue Cafe by the way! All of us here at Dank Radio play a varying range of instruments and we're all total gear heads. What's your preferred baby for performance and what do you have going on in your bass rig?
Dennis: My set up is very basic. I play a Fender Squire from the '80's (don't know the specific year) fitted with custom-made pickups made by Don Mare, who is a local musician who hand crafts excellent pickups for guitar and bass (www.donmare.com). I use an Ampeg SVT Pro 4 head and a Gallien-Krueger 410MBX 4 X 10" bass cabinet. I use a simple Boss distortion pedal and that's about it. I'm keeping things simple for right now.

Nativity: Steering things back to FMA. The album Control This [Purchase @ Amazon | iTunes] has been out for a bit and you guys have shared some personal videos through youtube about the making of. I'm starting see posts on Facebook about another release being worked on. Can we expect another album by the years end?
Dennis: I hope so.

Nativity: With or without a new release for 2011 one thing we all can expect is more shows. On Jan 29th you guys are performing with Yann Tiersen at The Luckman Fine Arts Complex. For our readers out there Yann Tiersen composed the soundtrack for Amélie [one of my favorite movies] and other amazing works of musical expression. How did that show come about? Are you guys going to perform with a full on string section? What can we expect?
Dennis: Someone from the Luckman Fine Arts Complex asked us to play. Last year, we toured with Sage Francis as an opening act and his backing band. Yann Tiersen wrote a song called "Best Of Times" on Sage's last album and, when the tour hit L.A., Yann happened to be in town, so he came to the show and played violin with us on "Best Of Times" with us. It was the highlight on the show for me.

More Info

Nativity: FMA is set to leave in less than a month for a EU tour with Subtitle. How did the tour come into fruition? Was this something that has been in the works for a while? Any specific cities on the tour that you're looking forward to the most?
Dennis: We met the right people and they made it happen. I've never been to the EU, so I'm just looking forward to the overall experience of going to a bunch of places that I've never been to before.

Nativity: You all went on a US national tour last year and now with the upcoming EU tour coming up, Is there anything you're doing differently to prepare? Is the approach with song selection and maybe set order different for the overseas audience?
Dennis: I don't think we're going to do anything different to prepare for this tour.

Nativity: Thanks again for taking the time to do the interview Dennis. Is there anything else you'd like to add. Any messages to the fans and friends of Free Moral Agents?
Dennis: Thanks for the interview. :-)

Wolfgang Gartner - Illmerica [Music Video]

Wolfgang Gartner : Official | Facebook | Twitter

There's a lot one can say about Wolfgang Gartner's music video for the track Illmerica. You can take the funny comedic route and point out how many deliberate inaccuracies were placed like the S.W.A.T. guard watching over Pocahontas or the sign in the forest that read "Do Not Place Unsolicited Advertising Materials On This Property." There are also the slap in the face depictions that make you think about the deeper historical implications like the pilgrims giving a Thanksgiving Turkey and bucket of toxic yams to the Native Americans. And there are also the images for those real history buffs. During the initial build up you have Nikola Tesla building his Wardenclyffe Towers to only have the untalented Edison push him out of the way to take credit for providing the world with a usable means of electric power. Or you could just say nothing, press play, and scratch your head and wonder, "Why didn't they teach us US History with videos like this in High School? People would of actually payed attention."

Sleigh Bells - Tell Em (Diplo Remix)

Sleigh Bells : Official | Facebook | Twitter

You just gotta love being an insomniac sometimes. Key word in the sentence is "sometimes". Lack of sleep + Refreshing twitter feed = Diplo's RT. I would attempt to describe Diplo's remix of Sleigh Bell's track Tell Em but the man himself has taken the liberty to express in great detail how the song came to be...

"Derek from sleigh bellz and me have matching florida tattoos and we both are from shitty parts of broward county // & their last album was one of the sickest of '10 .. its soo sick, its gave me a stomach ache .. half lyrnyrd skinnard half bangladesh half man half alligator.. . me and derek and alexis are bros and sis for life. in fact i like sleigh bells so much .. me and switch was in studio in nyc tryin to make tracks with derek and beyonce last week after we played her team their album .. dunno if we gonna manage to finish but was good times. I started this mix for them like a year ago but it took derek about 6 months to send stems so it was kinda in remix limbo but i really wanted to get it out to u guys cause i think the bass and the drums sounds nice and u can play it at your next party." by Diplo

Bilal - Levels directed by Flying Lotus [Music Video]

Bilal : Facebook | Flying Lotus : Official

[via] Not too long ago Flying Lotus was tweeting about working on a video with Bilal, Thundercat, and Erykah Badu but I really didn't know what to expect. Well VTech premiered Bilal's music video for Levels this morning and after watching it a few times I can't wait to share with you all this visually stunning piece of art. Here's what FlyLo has to say about the video...

“I originally wanted to keep visual themes with another video from my last LP called ‘mmhmm’ off of my last album. It featured Thundercat as an intergalactic bass player in a super strange world created by ‘Special Problems’. Since Thundercat was part of this song, I thought it could be fun to continue the visual style and feel of this space opera. In the end you have this crazy video made of so much mixed media, geek dreams and lots of love.”

Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar LIVE on Conan [Live Video]

Aloe Blacc [Stones Throw] : Official | Facebook | Twitter

Had the opportunity to catch Aloe Blacc at a local show last spring at The Commonwealth Lounge over in Fullerton. It was a treat to see a great local musician perform for an intimate setting. There were no more than 50 people that night and every single one of them had a great time. And so it was a great surprise to find out that he had taken this good time and presented it on one of my favorite tv shows, Conan. Here Aloe Blacc pulled all the stops with a full band and full line of backing vocalists. It's great to see more and more great local talent take the national stage. So when you're done watching his live performance below, be sure to check out the music video as well.

Fenech-Soler - Demons [Music Video & Tour Dates]

Fenech-Soler : Official | Facebook | Twitter | Youtube

fabricated introduced me to Sigma's remix of Fenech-Soler's track Demons a couple days ago and the chorus really just stuck with me. It was one of those where you can picture the vocalist really belting out each word with every ounce of emotion in their being. After playing the track over and over for about 7 times or so I finally checked out the original version and, "Wow!" Let's just say I've been playing this song everyday at least 10 times a day. If you're looking for something on the lines of Calvin Harris you'll like this track. The lyrics will speak to anyone who's been in a relationship position where the person not only gives you joy but ultimately is the main source of poison eating away at your soul. You could also just interpret the song as ones dependencies on intoxicants. But I'll let you decide...

Infrasonics - Volume 5

So I decided to make another Infrasonics post for this week just because I’ve been listening to a lot of stuff and I’m in the mood to write another post since I’m kind of tired of studying for this winter class I’m taking right now.

Don Diablo feat. Dragonette – Animale (Datsik Remix) [Purchase: Beatport | Juno – forthcoming on January 31]

Don Diablo ft. Dragonette - Animale (Datsik Dubstep Remix) by dondiablo

I always love the touch that Datsik puts on his tracks, be it an original or a remix. But I especially love what he did with this track because the vocal melody and synths are just as infectious as the gritty basslines he always puts in all of his tracks. This tune is a definite banger and I highly recommend it.

Phillysoundsystem – Sex, Drugs & Hospital EP [Purchase: Beatport]

PhillySoundSystem Ft Jess - Take You Away (Dubstep Mix) by PhillySoundSystem

Just thought I’d throw this release on here because I’m really diggin’ it. This just came out earlier this month on the 3rd on Beatport. I would jump on getting this release, but honestly, I’m just waiting for it to not be a Beatport exclusive so I can pick this up on Juno Download. And going off on a little tangent, I just want to say that I really dislike the fact that Beatport charges $1.00 more for each track if you want it in .wav, which is ridiculous and why I suggest buying tracks off Juno Download or Bleep whenever possible, where you can buy a whole release at a more reasonable price. Also, Beatport doesn’t even include album art with their releases whereas Juno Download gives you the option to.

But anyways, enough ranting from me. Let me start with the title track, Sex, Drugs & Hospital. This track has a strong four-on-the-floor beat throughout, which you don’t see often in many dubstep tracks, but this one holds its ground very well. It’s very reminiscent of Noisia’s “Alpha Centauri” with a female vocal sample in the background; the bassline has a lot of grit and filth but also with that quick decaying envelope sound in the synth that complements the hard hitting bass drum.

“Take You Away” (posted above) is a track that was actually in Phillysoundsystem’s last EP, the Memory Lane EP on LU10 Records, but is also included in this release, and I don’t see why not - this track has one catchy melody held up by vocals from Jess along with one fat bassline throughout the track. I love the very low wobble that’s going on underneath everything; it doesn’t overpower the drums nor the vocals and synths. This track would sound awesome in any dubstep set, be it a mellower one or one with harder hitting bangers.

Next, we have Camel Riddim, a track I can definitely see being played alongside darker dubstep tracks. This track has a sick wobbling bassline underneath that attacks on the upbeat of every couple of measures. It also has a very simple and effective bass drum and snare pattern backed up with some congas to drive the beat forward. If you’re a fan of Skream, Distance, or Pinch, you’ll like this one.

Let The Music Play starts out with some acoustic drums with a pad building up to a vocal part which rises up where it then drops with a dark and fat bassline which progresses with some grungy sounding wobbles every few measures. I’m really diggin’ the drums, especially the snare and the bass – they complement the bassline and the vocals in a way that makes it sound heavy without going too over the top.

Finally, we have Trench Foot, the last track on this release. I really enjoy this track because the intro builds up into a drop that keeps you up in the air even when the sub bass comes in. I would highly recommend this track in any filthy dubstep set because I feel the bassline will keep the crowd up on their feet and will have everyone’s hands up in the air. This is probably my favorite track off this release so definitely check it out.

Overall, this release is very versatile in any dubstep DJ’s set and is definitely an awesome listen. I highly recommend checking out other releases on LU10 Records because they put out a broad spectrum of heavy bangers in the dubstep and house departments.

Fenech-Soler – Demons (Sigma Remix) [Pre-order on iTunes]

I’m pretty stoked on this release because this drum & bass producer Sigma’s first proper dubstep release. If you haven’t heard the original version by Fenech-Soler, I highly suggest it because the chorus is just catchy as hell. And if you don’t know Sigma, I highly suggest checking out their tracks “Front To Back” and “Paint It Black” (I just realized these two tracks, right after another, rhyme, kind of.), two very prominent tracks that have been in rotation in many DJs’ sets and mixtapes, namely Sub Focus’ Future Bass mix and more recently, Nero’s Essential Mix, which Nativity got me hooked on since it came out. Overall, this track has a strong drop and a strong bassline while still maintaining the very catchy chorus and vocal parts throughout. I definitely think this remix does justice to the original track.

Bonus: Duck Sauce – Barbara Streisand (Sigma Remix)
This remix is just too sick to ignore, so I’ll post it up right here:

Duck Sauce - Barbara Streisand (Sigma Remix) by sigmahq

Example – Last Ones Standing (Doctor P Remix) [Purchase: Beatport]

Example - Last Ones Standing - Doctor P Remix by Ministry of Sound

This track might be a bit older than the last few ones I’ve been posting, but I just thought I’d share this because I ran across an mp3 of it on my hard drive (I really wish this wasn’t territory restricted in the U.S. on all the sites I buy music from because I’d really like to buy a lossless version of this!) while organizing my music and it brought me back to a few months ago when this track was on repeat in my car. I seriously could not get this track out of my head because it’s so damn catchy and fun to sing along to. This remix has a darker twist to the original track (which is equally as awesome). I definitely recommend this track along with the TC remix, which is a drum & bass remix with a heavy sub bass that’ll rattle your brain at high volumes, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, his most recent album Won’t Go Quietly.

Evol Intent – Paradize City [Purchase: Beatport]

If you've followed our blog recently, last month, one of our own, Nightfox, interviewed Treasure Fingers aka The Enemy, one third of Evol Intent, a trio of American producers mostly known for making some of the heaviest drum & bass I've come across so far. Well, they've come out with a new dubstep release including this track and a remix by J. Rabbit of their track "Reality Check". I first heard heard this track a few months ago when Excision played it on his Shambhala 2010 mix and I thought this track was one of the many tracks on that mix that caught my attention. The basslines are filthy, the bridge is chockfull of 808 kicks, and the vocals in this track are just as hard as the other instruments. Highly recommended to fill that void Britney Spears' latest pseudo-dubstep track made in your heart.

Jack Beats - Mixmag Mini Mix

Jack Beats : Facebook | Twitter | Soudcloud

Was running late for work again this morning and I was trying to find a 6 min. track to play while I got my things in order. Good thing I was logged onto facebook when I saw Jack Beats post this FREE mini mix they did for Mixmag. All you have to do is click on the image on their facebook page and it'll automatically download.

There are lots of things to take into consideration when planning/performing a mix. There's song selection with familiar vs new tracks. You have to pace the vibe and flow of intensity to create a whole musical journey for the listener. To take things to an advance level you can even mix in key and progress all the songs in ascending or descending order. Somehow the Jack Beats managed to do all of this in 5 min and 24 seconds. If you're wondering what two master Turntablists can do when they go from turning skratch tricks into making house hits download the mix and find out. If you're looking for more I've went ahead and included some of my favorite tracks of theirs down below.

Infrasonics - Volume 4

Hey there everyone! Before I begin, Nativity’s brought to my attention that we’ve been getting more readers from the UK, France, Germany, and Russia. So thank you guys for checking us out and on behalf of the Dank Radio family, we hope you join us more every week for something different from each of us. Also, be sure to check out our most recent Dank Radio broadcast with an exclusive hip-hop mix by dubstep producer Jakwob!

Dank Radio - King's Day Buffet (1-15-11) by dankradio

With that said, here’s another week of Infrasonics and I’d like to start off by featuring a release made by my cousin who goes by Rally J.

Rally J - Caution (album) [Listen and download at http://rallyj.bandcamp.com/album/caution]

Rally J makes chiptunes (8-bit music) using an original Nintendo Game Boy with LSDJ, which is pretty much a music workstation for the Game Boy platform. I really dig the fact that they sound like the soundtrack for a video game, but at the same time, very danceable. Check out this and his other release and feel free to download them!

Fabricated - Pinay Catfight

So here’s a track that I finished last week. What I have posted here isn’t a completely finished version, but it’s close enough. I’m currently working on a 174 BPM drumstep version in addition to a remix for a friend of mine in San Diego, CA. I might include all 3 of these in a release soon on bandcamp or something. Check out the track and let me know what you think!

Late Night Alumni - It’s Not Happening (Original Mix) [Purchase: Beatport | Juno]

This track came out a few days ago and being a fan of Late Night Alumni, I had to check this one out. “It’s Not Happening” starts out with some reverse samples, and then some cymbals and a synth kick in, and right when the vocals come in, a shuffling garage beat and a discrete yet deep bassline come in and that’s where it gets me. Also, check out the Kaskade mix too if you’re into progressive house.

Merce - Memories [Purchase: Beatport | Juno]

Here’s another track with a garage beat on it that I stumbled upon looking at the new tracks that came out this week. Very relaxing and ambient sounding with some Burial-esque drums and sampling. I recommend checking out the other track on this release, Watchtower, which is equally as relaxing with a dubstep beat, some really deep bass, and what I take to be a smooth and sexy saxaphone sample drowned in reverb in the back.

George Fitzgerald - Don’t You [Purchase: Juno]

Being a fan of anything Hotflush Recordings releases, this just came out today and when I heard it, I felt that I should post this up. I really dig the vocal sample every few beats along with the chilled out beat and fat bassline underneath those drums. Highly recommend if you were digging the last two tracks I posted along with artists like Joy Orbison, Scuba, or Breakage.

Jakes - Claw [Puchase: Juno | Bleep]

All I really have to say about this track can be summed up in two words – HUGE DROP! Crank up the bass for this one! Massive bassline, sick top line coming in around a minute, and really punchy reverberated drums will give you your daily dose of filth. If you’re a fan of Skream, Benga, or basically anything dark, heavy, and filthy, I highly recommend this track.

Skream & Benga on Radio 1 - In New DJ’s We Trust

I think the tracks on this broadcast as well as Skream & Benga themselves should be enough reason why you should listen to this radio broadcast (over and over). The amount of unreleased tracks on this broadcast made me excited for what’s coming up in the near future this year and hopefully, you’ll feel the same way too!

Track list:

Distance — Fallin’ feat Alys Blaze – Island

Skream & Example — Shot Yourself In The Foot Again

Youngman — Slaughter – Digital Soundboy

Dread MC & TC — Concrete – Dub

Slaughter Mob — Dubphonic – Dub

Sublime - 40 Oz. To Freedom [Sunday Funday]

I was going to wait a while before I shared my thoughts on this album but in true Sublime fashion I just said, "F(*)ck it let's do it!". It was around High School when my older cousin[the same one who made me listen to MetallicA] introduced me to 40 Oz. To Freedom on the way to school[the album, not alcohol, that was later, much later]. The first song that played on the car speakers was Waiting For My Ruca and with that I was hooked. I thought, "This is a song? Just a kick drum, snare, vocals?! Where are the guitars?! The bass?!" And as the song played the following lyrics caught my attention, "She moved from Long Beach down to L.A. Right now she's selling oranges by the freeway. I want to know, 'Ramona am I the only one tell me?' And she said, 'you're not the only one but you're the best Bradley bop! bop!'" I was surprised to learn that Sublime was from Long Beach. No wonder these lyrics spoke to me. It was written from a guy who walked the same streets as me and had similar life experiences that all the locals shared.

Sublime is one of those bands that people either love or hate. I had an English teacher my sophomore year of HS that loathed Sublime. The whole class couldn't understand why. The band spoke to every person from every socio-economic stature in this fine city of Long Beach. It was the ska music that picked up the energy when things weren't going too well. It was the perfect music to toke to when hanging out with your buddies at the house[1) so i've heard. 2) all the locals refer to hanging out at someones home as 'the house'. don't ask me why.]. It was the explosive in your face punk rock attitude that fueled the working class person. It was also the thought provoking hip hop lyrics that made you question the simple and complicated life issues. And do you know why that English teacher of mine hated Sublime? He said that every single party he went to back in the day where Sublime was scheduled to perform, they didn't play. He said Bradley was too drunk or drugged up and passed out some corner of the house party.

I wasn't fortunate enough to see Bradley, Eric, Bud, and Lou Dog perform but there are many locals who did. One of my cousins told me she volunteered at an event at the old Rainbow Lagoon just to watch Sublime perform with a full horn section. A friend's older brother told me that he went to most of the house parties Sublime performed at and even had a copy of the original 40 oz. To Freedom. He told me he never thought much about it and gave the tape to someone and never asked for it back. You can see how much their influence has ingrained itself into the locals back then and even now. Even till this day you can go to a house party anywhere in Long Beach and hear someone on an acoustic guitar playing their rendition of Badfish.

Like my love and great respect for the music of MetallicA, I can go on and on and on about Sublime and this album. We can touch base on how No Doubt and Sublime used to sing on each others tracks. Or how they were some of the first bands on Warped Tour back when it started. I can share stories of how Bradley almost lost Lou Dog at The Blue Cafe and how it was the same venue that D$, [e]ccentric, and I performed at when we were playing as a band[we weren't exactly of the drinking age of 21+ when we performed]. But with many things Sublime and Long Beach oriented you just have to experience it for yourself. I'm pretty sure that's how Bradley would of wanted it be...

James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream [Live Video]

James Blake: Official | Facebook | Youtube

We first shared the amazing music by James Blake with you all back in April of 2010. Through the random tweets of Diplo and my usual cases of insomnia I discovered the uniqueness of his music. His originality hasn't slowed down a bit and he's further pushing how one can progress in sound expression. Those not familiar will be surprised to know he started off with intentions to create dubstep but kept on scrapping sounds that weren't original to him.

Below you will find a beautiful performance of The Wilhelm Scream first heard and shared with the world on BBC Radio 1. It's the second track of his upcoming debut self titled release which will be released later this year on ATLAS/A&M. You can pre-order the album here. Press play and enjoy...

Rustie - Sunburst EP

Rustie: Official | Facebook | Twitter | Purchase @ Juno | Beatport

G1ockz gave me the heads up about a week or so ago about this dude on Warp who sounds like HudMo but with more of an emphasis on crazy guitar solos and even crazier synth lines. I honestly didn't think it was possible. But then again, everything in this life cycle is possible.

So we pulled up his page on the Warp website and the first thing I see is this piece of album artwork that just jumps out at me. I thought it was something straight out of a Thundercats episode or some other cartoon tv show or video game from the 80s that G1ockz would of then proceeded to tell me about. If you're looking for groovy head bangin' hands in the air party with your good times until the sun rises and falls on repeat, get the EP. And if that's not enough to convince you Rustie still DJs w/ tables and he's even mixed his EP for your previewing pleasure...

Rustie - Sunburst EP Minimix (out 4/5 October on Warp Records) by Warp Records

And to further illustrate the awesomeness of this EP is the visual aid below staring Steve Martin and John Candy. I'm pretty sure this isn't the official video for Hyperthrust but they should use the same movie clips. Come to think of it that car spinning part reminds me of a crazy car crash story G1ockz told us about. And John Candy's dance moves look like something I did while i was watching Rusko at Abstract Fest last year.

Jakwob - USA & Canada 2011 Winter Tour [Feature Interview]

Jakwob [Boom Ting Records] : Official | Facebook | Twitter | Soundcloud

We posted Jakwob's Smokers Delight Mixtape 1.0 about a week ago and it came as a delightful surprise to see Jakwob share our link with his fans on his Facebook page that same morning. And as the thankful fans we are we contacted him and his team to say how grateful we are for the love sent back to us and that we would be open to helping spread his music in any additional way possible. A couple emails went back and forth and below I present you the result of one brief post and the power of the internet. In addition to the Interview below Jakwob has cooked up a special mix for us that we will air on this weekends edition of Dank Radio. So be sure to tune in this Saturday Jan 15th [4:00am-6:00am PST | 12:00pm-2:00pm GMT/London] on KPFK 90.7FM LA|KPFK.org Streaming Worldwide [More info HERE].

Nativity: First off, thank you for taking the time to do this interview and Happy New Year. How did your holiday go? Did you do anything fun aside from snowboarding? Finish COD?
Jakwob: Still haven’t pretiged on COD, I’m not THAT nerdy. Apart from boarding (which was sick), I spent time in solitary confinement watching old films and also seeing old friends.

The Flood Remix by jakwob

Nativity: It's been quite a while since we heard a proper update from you aside from your tweets and facebook posts. Now that it's a new year how does it feel when you look back at all the progress from 2009-2010? Any favorite moments or performances that really stand out to you?
Jakwob: Yeah it has been an epic journey so far, I notably enjoyed Glastonbury and Bestival and working with some great artists. Very shortly you will hear the new record along with remixes from other people of my own material which is exciting me greatly!

Nativity: Last year you set up your very own record label, Boom Ting Recordings. Can you explain how that came about? Was this something you and Neil always wanted to do from the start or did the need for your own outlet grow as your music started to reach more people?
Jakwob: It’s something I have always wanted to do as I have a really passion for all types of music and working with artists and developing them and I thought as soon as I get into a position where I have an audience for my sound I can give other artists a platform they might not otherwise have. The label is acting as a catalyst label pushing and developing new artists – there are going to be some amazing things happening in the next few months.

Jakwob - Rolla by jakwob

Nativity: I see. With that said, what type of music are you looking to release? The company overview on the facebook page reads, "To expose you to the freshest, tastiest and most talented artists from across the board!" I know you have
influences of all varying types. Can we expect any hip hop releases?
Jakwob: Definitely. Hip hop has been a major influence in what I do and I have already been given a few CDs at gigs from hip hop producers and I am looking forward to making some collaborations with artists and producers who have approached me.

Nativity: Speaking of Hip Hop, you've expressed in many interviews and through a handful of your mixes your love and respect for Hip Hop. You've played tracks from The Fugees, Busta Rhymes, Jurassic 5, and more. If you could book your own show with your favorite Hip Hop artists[living and deceased] who would you pick for the bill?
Jakwob: In no particular order it would be Mary J Blige, Q-tip, Slick Rick, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, Moss Death and Madlib on drums - ahhh too many!

Nativity: Are there any producers you'd love to work with [Hip Hop, Dubstep, etc.]? Or currently working with that you'd like to share?
Jakwob: I would love to work with all of the above, plus a cheeky session with Snoop.

Lilley Allen - The Fear - (Jakwob Remix) by jakwob

Nativity: A handful of us in Dank Radio create music ourselves and are curious as to what you use in your creative process[software/hardware/instruments]? From the moment you start a track up until you master it out do you primarily stay with Reason or do you use different DAWs for different needs? Any word on when the video you recorded with Propellerhead will be released?
Jakwob: I produce all sounds either with real instruments or Reason and then I mix in Logic but I primarily use Reason/Record to write my songs. No idea when the video comes through but as soon as it does I will post it immediately!

Nativity: I really enjoy the video for Here With Me[And the making of video as well]. The story matches up quite perfectly with the cinematic vibe of the song. What was it like teaming up with your friend Lucy Bridger to help bring out the visual aspect of your audible creation. Are there any plans for a video of Scare The Snare?
Jakwob: It is always a pleasure working with Lucy, she is always in control of anything visual to do with Boom Ting and Jakwob. The video was a really really fun project to work on and Lucy and I are currently working on the next few videos and just about to shoot the next. But there is no talk of a video of Scare The Snare – sorry!

Purchase Jakwob - Here With Me @ Beatport | iTunes | Amazon

Nativity: Just got word that the San Francisco date of your USA & Canada tour is sold out. Congratulations. Are you looking forward to any specific dates on the tour? A lot of producer/DJs tend to throw in some LA favorites whenever they're in town. Can we expect any Dr. Dre or 2pac at your Cinespace gig?
Jakwob: Yeah is pretty mental that it is sold out. I can’t wait to play LA, it is going to be a good half way house and I am going to have a good time meeting and working with people there and maybe have some time to produce some hip hop dub! The possibility of me playing a cheeky tribute track is quite high!

Nativity: What are your plans for after the tour? Is it back to the studio to work on your next release? Or is that and a whole new batch of remixes already on it's way to the public?
Jakwob: After the tour the next record will be out along with videos, the first other artist released from Boom Ting and whole load more dates for the US!

Nativity: I can't wait for the next batch of songs. Thanks again for doing this Jakwob. Is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers or your fans? Any tips for aspiring producers balancing their course work and production duties?
Jakwob: Music…work…music…work…MUSIC!!!!
