Good Foot Christmas 2012 @ Alex's Bar 12/25/12 [Live Video]

A Good Foot Christmas 2012 @ Alex's Bar 12/25/12 | Video by: Magic Milk

I watch quite a bit of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations + The Layover and wonder at times where I'd take Anthony in Long Beach to get drunk and have a good time. He always seems to end up at random cities on "holidays" so I figure if he were in Long Beach on Christmas night I'd take him to Good Foot Christmas. For the non-locals and non-versed in LA Funk events, Good Foot was a 13(?) year running monthly here in Long Beach at Que Sera that was put on by Dennis Owens of Free Moral Agents. To my knowledge it was the longest running party in Long Beach. They started it back in the day before the internet and social media so it was quite a bit of work to get 100 to 200 plus people dancing to the best .45 vinyl selections of Funk music in a grimmey dive bar in Long Beach. The monthly may have closed shop, but Dennis brings back the event for select celebrations, such as Christmas. It's one of those Cheers moments when all the locals come out and just drink, dance, frolic, and fornicate. Eccentric met another local and she sent us this video they created. See you next Christmas on the dance floor...

Sublime - Doin' Time

Sublime - Doin' Time

Happy Fourth of July everyone residing in the US. It's a beautiful cloudy day here in Long Beach. People are with their families and friends at the parks and on the beach. I can smell my neighbors bbq carne asadas and chicken. There's no work and no school for most of us so it's all fun times all around. Hope everyone has a good time and please be safe out there. Find yourself a designated driver and remember to shout Hootie Hoo when you see cops.

Justin Katerberg of Vitalic Noise [Feature Interview + Upcoming Event]

Vitalic Noise : Official | Facebook | Twitter

It's those moments in passing at a gig or at a show when you never know who you're going to meet. Not too long ago I spun at a local Long Beach warehouse event put on by a friend of mine and the DJ before me was playing a lot of really cool indie dance tracks that I wished more DJs would play in opening sets. Made a formal introduction and gave 'em a heads up that I would be setting up my gear on the other side of the table. [Hint: New DJs please be cordial and tactful at gigs. Make peace w/ everyone you're performing with. No one really knows who you are and until you're being flown in on a helicopter or a private jet you're basically at the same level as everyone else. So play nice.] Justin was the dude's name and he said he just moved to Long Beach and to check out his website for some music. I checked it out and really liked what I heard. Months pass and he invites me out to a new weekly he's starting in Long Beach. What a great opportunity I thought to shed some light on who he is and what musical vibrations are emanating from Vitalic Noise.

Paving The Way to Paid Dues 2012 - TayF3rd [Music Video + Tickets On-Sale]

Welcome to the 3rd edition of Paving the Way to Paid Dues. Aptly enough for our third edition we feature TayF3rd. A Long Beach native, it looks like Long Beach has once again cultivated another talented artist. Formerly a heavy jerkin rapper, TayF3rd proves to have evolved into a bigger and badder entity in the hip hop game. Ask anyone who’s got their ears to the streets, TayF3rd holds it down for Eastside Long Beach, if you don't believe me, listen to his mix tapes entitled "Sand Box" and "I Am Long Beach," that will put all qualms to rest. Perceivably charismatic and possessing an insatiable hunger for life, living and thriving. Despite his long hair TayF3rd is both an artist and a business man with an aptitude for the streets. His music and work reflect nothing less than his mastery of both attributes. TayF3rd continues to make music with an undeniable west coast feel. Not to be mistaken with those who came before TayF3rd is an entity all his own. Despite his large following TayF3rd continues to be an allusive rapper whose hard hitting and entrancing music will soon put an end to his anonymity. Throwing on any of his tracks, it becomes difficult to not turn it up and have a good time hitting the hustle or stepping' out. A couple of TayF3rd tracks that need to be give a listen are, "On My Shit," "Mailman Mailman," and "Conceited," Currently TayF3rd is putting in work and making more magic in the studio. Needless to say his new work is much anticipated and with his upcoming performance at Paid Dues 2012 his success will only multiply like the racks he's after. TayF3rd, keep putting on for your city because you've got Strong Beach; the Sand Box standing behind you.

Sublime with Rome ft. Wiz Khalifa - Can You Feel It

Sublime with Rome [Fueled By Ramen] : Official | Pre order Yours Truly here

I'm going to have to sit down with this track just a little bit. Might have to walk over to the Liquor store to get me a 40 to drink while I enjoy this. When I heard their first single Panic, I couldn't help but think of Less Than Jake. I think it was the song structure + horn section + production style + knowing they're on Fueled By Ramen. Yes I know FBR also has Paramore on their roster, but don't you forget it was Vinnie from LTJ who founded FBR. End of tangent. Look at the ghetto bird up above...

I.T.S. Presents : Beats For A Bench [Feature Interview]

I.T.S. Presents : Beats For A Bench : Event Info | Pre Sale Tickets

Over the past year it has become even more apparent to me that the city of Long Beach is becoming more and more organized in terms of quality music events. Sure you can say I'm biased because I'm involved with a handful of events. I'm also biased because a good number of my friends are creating/nurturing these events. Regardless of my ties to the city it's safe to say we have something to say and more importantly we stand for something. Whether it be for music, fun, family, or the benefit of our fellow human beings.

Recently through various circles of music heads I met a man who also stands for something. To trail it back a couple steps we clicked because we liked the same music. Whenever I meet another being who diggs what I digg then we automatically click. Enter Steven Kerns, who gave me a heads up about this event he was organizing for a fallen comrade. I asked him who was performing and he told me. I asked him where was it going to be held and he said, "Long Beach." That's more than enough info for me right there. I'd go into greater detail, but I'm just going to let him do most of the talking...

Nate Dogg - Never Leave Me Alone [Music Video]

R.I.P. Nate Dogg | Nathaniel Dwayne Hale (August 19, 1969 - March 15, 2011)

The year was 1996 and I was in the sixth grade. At the time I was slangin' mixtapes for $5.00 a pop to my classmates and the older kids in the 7th and 8th grade. This was a time before High Speed Internet|iTunes|Torrents|Facebook|Napster and the only way we were exposed to new music was through the TV|Radio|Records. I wasn't fortunate enough to have cable growing up so all I had to rely on was good 'ol FM Radio and whatever new crates of records my older cousins came home with after their diggin' trips to LA.

I remember waiting for my ride after school. Unlike G1ockz and D$ I wasn't on the basketball team at the time [or any sports for that matter] so after finishing my homework I had nothing better to do than just sit and wait. One of the older kid's ride rolled through in one of the many standard and classic Long Beach rides[don't ask me what kind of car it was. i'm not into cars]. When the passenger side door flew open I heard that bass and that thump of the chorus. I went "ah ha! i need to find that song so I can throw it on so and so's mixtape!" I quickly jotted a note in my composition notebook and proceeded to hum the hook over and over until my dad picked me up...

Robots & Angels Present: Bomb Zombies + Thavius Beck + 2mex + Rahfee Zahkee 1|20|11 [Concert Review]

Robots & Angels [Official | Facebook | Twitter] @ Blue Cafe

Robots & Angels returned to the Underground of Blue Cafe for another night of quality music. But on this night the focus was shifted on not so much the traditional band but more of the contemporary producer and lyricist. Having two of the residents from the hallowed Low End Theory come down to Long Beach was surely a treat. DJ Nobody and MC Nocando both talented artists on their own right combined like Goku and Vegeta to form Bomb Zombies. We were also treated by bass bumping beat focused set by the locally based and internationally traveled Ableton sensei Thavius Beck. Unfortunately Jon Wayne was unable to perform due to illness but luckily for us 2mex was able to step in and fill the lyrical void. And to round off the night of beats emulating from computerized contraptions was Rahfee Zahkee...

Robots & Angels Present: Free Moral Agents + Physical Forms + Wild Pack Of Canaries + Rahfee Zahkee 1|13|11 [Concert Review]

Robots & Angels [Official | Facebook | Twitter] @ Blue Cafe

It was a calm and cool evening in downtown Long Beach that set the stage for the re-birth of not only the Pine Ave scene but for a group of organizers as well. Robots & Angels started the year off proper with a showcase of amazing local talent. It was here in the Blue Cafe's Underground where the sounds of Wild Pack of Canaries [Mountain Man Records] + Physical Forms [Busdriver's new band] + Free Moral Agents [Ikey from The Mars Volta] + Rahfee Zahkee brought together people from other bands, venues, and party circles. The energy was steadily growing at the start with Rahfee's unique dj performance and the good times just kept on expanding as the night went on...
