SMOG brought two of the UK’s finest producers to Southern California – Bristol’s Joker and Croydon’s Plastician – for a bass-filled evening at the Observatory in Santa Ana, CA on Saturday, January 12. Newham Generals’ Footsie provided support along with Son of Kick and a back-to-back set from SMOG all-stars Kelly Dean and Pawn.

Jakwob - Fade [Forthcoming Release]
James Jacob Jakwob has recently focused more on his LIVE band productions and performances as one has seen with his last release titled The Prize. We've kept an eye out on what he's been churning out and we honestly can't wait until he brings his LIVE performance over here to the states. He recently sent over Detox as a radio exclusive that later was released to the public (download here). When he shared the track below I jumped out of seat in excitement, "Yes, This is the TUNE!". If you don't believe me you can check out his twitter page where I tweeted him my excitement. James, please send this over to us. We will play it on Dank Radio. In fact, we'll rinse it out on Dank Radio AND our DJ sets!

#fastforwardfriday Michael Woods - We've Only Just Begun (feat. Ester Dean) (Calyx & Teebee Remix) [Forthcoming]
Feel the smooth vibes on this beautiful remix of Michael Woods' "We've Only Just Begun (feat. Ester Dean)" by UK techstep production duo Calyx & Teebee. These guys seriously know how to flip a track – just listen to their remix of Little Dragon's "Little Man"
The smooth melodic progressive house riffs that ride over the bassline hit the spot for me, and the vocals help make it even better. But my favorite part of this track is the epic bridge with the strings that fade out back into the main riff that goes into the vocal, which then goes into the next drop.
This tune comes out October 21st on Ministry of Sound. Keep an eye out for this one!

#fastforwardfriday T.E.E.D. - Household Goods (Enei Remix)
I decided that #fastforwardfriday is going to be my weekly post for drum & bass or anything of that sort. So check here weekly to see what d&b tracks I'm vibing on at the moment!
Anyways, I came across this awesome d&b remix by Russian producer Enei of T.E.E.D's "Household Goods." The deep vibe of this remix reminds me of Calibre's remix of T.E.E.D's "Garden" released last year. I would definitely love to play this in one on the radio or at a gig.
Pick this tune up at Beatport along with more remixes of the track by DJ Zinc, Lil Silva, and Mano Le Tough!

Etherwood - Shake The Foundations EP [New Release + Free Download]
Etherwood [Boomting Recordings] : Facebook | Twitter | Soundcloud
For those of you who have just joined us recently on Dank Radio, you may not know, but we're all big fans and supporters of Jakwob. We've featured a hip hop mix of his on Dank Radio + Feature Interview on the site + Concert Review at Cinespace. What you don't know is that we've all been patiently waiting for a release from his own record label Boomting Recordings. Cue in Etherwood, Jakwob's guitarist for his live show as well as Drum & Bass producer extraordinaire. His latest release titled The Foundations EP [Download here or @ Boomting]will satisfy any and all late night thirsts for liquid drum & bass. The first track "Spoken" sets the mood perfectly as the sun slowly rises through my window this morning. If this is Jakwob's way of setting the tone for what's to come, we gladly wait for more.

Bassrush presents Funktion Wednesdays: Photek & Reso @ Dim Mak Studios 02/08/12 [Concert Review]
Photo credit: Oh Dag Yo/Bassrush |
This was my first time attending a Bassrush event as well as attending an event at the Dim Mak Studios in Hollywood, formerly known as the Cinespace. Bassically (see what I did there?), I didn't know what to expect, which I felt was a good thing, because it meant that I had no expectations (good or bad) walking in. After spending a good amount of time looking for parking, I finally was able to get to the venue. Although I was a bit late, I managed to get there right when Reso was starting his set.

HARD and SMOG present Dub Police Tour 2012 at House of Blues Hollywood 3/3/12 [Concert Review]
Photo credit: Timothy Norris/LA Weekly |
The Dub Police Tour presented by HARD and SMOG made its stop in the LA area at the House of Blues Hollywood off Sunset Boulevard this past Saturday, March 3rd, 2012 with a massive line up that caused people to flock to the venue from everywhere – I saw cars from Maryland and Georgia in the parking lot, just to give you an idea of how far people probably traveled for this completely SOLD OUT event. I saw people who desperately wanted to get in asking everyone in line if they had an extra ticket to the event. The line to get into the event was insane, wrapping around the whole entire House of Blues and extending further down Sunset.
On the decks for the evening were Matty G, a surprise set from The Others, D1, a back-to-back set with Trolley Snatcha and Subscape, and Dub Police label founder Caspa headlining the show. The sound system for the evening was cranked up to floor-rattling volumes and you could tell that mostly everyone that attended the show were pretty huge fans not just of the Dub Police label and artists, but of dubstep and bass music in general – this was apparent as I was standing in the long line and saw people sporting Circus Records, Dub Police, Sub Soldiers, and Rusko shirts as well as blasting their favorite dubstep songs out of their tiny iPhone speakers. While the event did start an hour later than the ticket advertised (the event started at 9pm instead of 8pm), as soon as Matty G started playing, the sonic assault of basslines was just nonstop throughout the whole evening.

SMOG & GetDarker present: This Is Dubstep 2012 Album Launch Party w/ Benga + Katy B + DJ Craze [Concert Review + Free Download]
SMOG | GetDarker | The Observatory
Eccentric, Fabricated, G1ockz, and I headed back down to Santa Ana's The Observatory to experience another wonderful SMOG event [many thanks to Drew and the whole SMOG crew for their continued support + hospitality]. This time they partnered up with the one and only GetDarker. It was the first website I ever went to see Nero do a Drum & Bass dj set as well as Skream spin a set on a pair of Technics 1200s. GetDarker was celebrating the release of their compilation This Is Dubstep 2012 [purchase at iTunes | Amazon] and decided to join us here in Southern California for a proper party. Speaking of parties, after an extremely fun and eventful time with Skream + 12th Planet + Flinch we were really looking forward to seeing Skream's other half Benga. In addition to Benga's beats we were in store for the vocally stunning Katy B, multiple DMC champion turntablist and Slow Roast Records head honcho DJ Craze, and the creator of GetDarker himself, Darkside. Fabricated will take it from here and take you through that night's festivities. - Nativity

Netsky - Give & Take [New Single]
New single from Netsky out NOW on Hospital Records. 'Feel-good dancefloor-driven liquid D&B at its best, with sultry, slo-mo beats giving way to rolling drums, shuddering subs and the kind of soaring asymmetrical synth melodies and shimmying piano keys which make up Netsky's signature sound.' Coachella Cornucopia II - Nero [Tour Dates]

Nero: Official | Facebook | Twitter | Youtube
I'm more than certain I've explained my appreciation for this amazing production/dj duo signed to MTA Records, Nero. But we've been getting a surge of new readers from across the globe so I'll re-hash it briefly. I actually thought Nero was just one dude when first heard of them. The track was Innocence. I don't remember where it was or who shared the music video with me, but at the time it was the coolest thing I've seen. Being a long time fan of Japanese Anime and Sci Fi films/concepts it was something that I've always wanted to do. Something I will probably do in the future to help explain my own music. But these guys beat me to it.
