Frank Nitt [Feature Interview]

Detroit’s Frank Nitt has seen it all, more so than your average ‘keep it real’ MC. He has seen the meteoric rise and untimely death of friend, collaborator and certified hip hop legend J Dilla. He eye-witnessed Common record a platinum album, and Black Thought free-styling in a strip club parking lot. And he now chronicles his first hand experiences in the 48 page memoir The View from the Underground, which comes included in this brand new deluxe casebook edition album, Stadium Music. As Frank Nit puts it; ‘All of my travel, all of my musical influences, and all of my relationships… I talk about love on there, and hardship. I talk about just wanting to be a dope MC.‘ The album features beats and rhymes by Illa J, Que D, Dank, Kid Sublime, Kevin Cofield, Numbe:ra and others, plus a foreword by his personal acquaintance and adult film star Tara Lynn Foxx.” We chat with Frank to get the low down on Stadium Music and everything else Frank Nitt related.

Dank Radio: Can you give us a brief background about yourself, history of Frank N Dank, and how you hooked up with J D?

Frank Nitt: I've been putting out hip hop since 1998/99 as a member of FnD [Frank N Dank] and I began my solo career in 2008, I actually met dilla in 1986, we went to middle school together, so the music side just grew from that.. it wasnt a, I met a producer and we became friends, my friend became a producer!

Red Bull Music Academy Presents: Boombox 5th Annual J Dilla Tribute [Concert Review]

In the spirit of this wonderful J Dilla month, i had the great opportunity to attend one of the many J Dilla tributes happening out here in the city of Angels. Fellow music aficionado Joolyaah and I were in attendance at Boombox's 5th annual J Dilla Tribute hosted by the Red Bull Music Academy, held at the Grandstar Jazz Club in Chinatown Los Angeles. This years tribute show included sets from the legendary Maseo of De La Soul and Ali Shaheed Muhammed from none other than A Tribe Called Quest. In addition our ears were also blessed with the local talented Boombox LA Djs. Amidst the swarm of bodies by the bar and packed room Joolyaah began frantically screaming, "Guilty Simpson is here, Guilty Simpson is here...!" yet another musical emcee gracing the streets, airwaves, and that night those in attendance with his tantalizing beats.

Shigeto : Facebook | Twitter
I was super inspired from all the love in the air for Jay Dee's Birthday today. Got me thinking about what an inspiration Detroit music is. Then got me thinking about other Detroit artists. Then got me thinking about Aaliyah, another amazing talent that we lost way to soon. So I made this. Inspired by Aaliyah, Jay Dee and Detroit.

J Dilla - Dreamy

J Dilla : Official | Facebook | The J Dilla Foundation : Official | Facebook

As we have now been officially ushered into the Age of Aquarius, the very first step in this long adventurous journey will begin with the month of February. Every February we celebrate the life + music + love of J Dilla with our annual Dillathon broadcast on KPFK 90.7FM. Through the watchful eye of our fallen musicians stars have aligned and paths have crossed between the J Dilla Foundation and ourselves. The result has culminated in the Featured Interview w/ Ma Dukes by Eccentric. In addition to the featured interview we have extended the Flip It For Dilla tribute contest to last until our February 18th Dank Radio broadcast with in-studio guest The Internet (Syd Tha Kyd & Matt Martians of Odd Future). So please take your time and make your music right before sending it our way. In addition to having your music heard on FM Airwaves across the ether we will also be doing a mini feature artist interview with the winner. Our annual Dillathon will broadcast LIVE this Saturday February 4th from 4am-6am [PST] on KPFK 90.7FM LA and throughout the world at kpfk.org. We will have a special LIVE in-studio DJ set by J-logic along with other goodies from the likes of Z, Daedelus, and others.

Ma Dukes aka Maureen Yancey talks about the J Dilla Foundation, the importance of the Arts, and new album 'Rebirth of Detroit' [Feature Interview]

Just as J Dilla aka Jay Dee aka James Dewitt Yancey’s music had magically appeared into my life, so had my connection with the J Dilla Foundation. It all started with a simple Facebook friend request from Marketing/Brand Manager Diana Boardley. I usually don’t go through with random friend requests but this time I took a glance just to see what it was that brought this new person into my life. Upon clicking Diana’s profile I noticed her affiliation with the J Dilla foundation and the rest is history.

Eccentric: Hello Ma Dukes! Thank you for taking the time to sit down and chat with us. How are you doing today? How is your New Year going so far?

Ma Dukes: Thank you for having me today, I’m fine thank you, health is improving. This new year is looking up with innovative ideas to help us keep up and incorporate new ideas as we move forward. It’s time for new beginnings and progress..

Akai MPC Renaissance [New Gear]

Akai: Official

The revolutionary pioneers in music production and drum machines also known as AKAI have done it again. This time, they are back with a new sleek design with even more features than the original for the modern day producer with the MPC Renaissance. Coincidentally enough, I was just having a chat with my buddy the other day about new set ups and how he could implement his MPC2000, or any other set of drum pads into a computer production midi set up. Now with the introduction of the MPC Renaissance, any other sampler and/or drum machine in existence is out of question. The classic MPC style pads are heavy duty and can take the heaviest of pounding and creating. Complete with an array of inputs and outputs, both for Audio and MIDI, the MPC Renaissance is sure to revive producers both old and new and set them into the new age. My favorite part is the dedicated phono input for your turntable. Now you don't have to go through that old school radio shack mixer you've had since the 80's anymore!

Manni Dee [Feature Interview + Exclusive Mix]

Manni Dee: Official | Soundcloud

Some people will tell you, "The Internet is over saturated with music." They'll also say "Most of the music online is crap." They might even go into a rant about the good 'ol days or ask you if you've ever been to a record store before. My response is, "Yes I've been to a record store. A mom & pop record store in fact. Actually, we have a great local mom & pop record store here in Long Beach called Fingerprints. You should go check it out and say, 'Hey Rand! Nice store you got here.'" [He's the owner.] What was my point again for this introduction?...[thinking. coffee is kicking in]

Oh! As many of the older guard of music enthusiasts will credit their local record store for their initiation and education on the vast limitless volumes of music ever known to human kind. I on the other hand have Napster+Illegal Sharing Networks+Internet to thank for exposing me to music. Que in our friend Manni Dee from across the Atlantic who's been busy crafting and performing his wonky futuristic beat bass music. He contacted us through Soundcloud and sent us some tracks. We liked it so we played it. We liked it so much we wanted to help him out and do more for him so here we are with the interview below. He's a cool dude. I'm going to buy him a pint when we hang...
