Robots & Angels Present: Bomb Zombies + Thavius Beck + 2mex + Rahfee Zahkee 1|20|11 [Concert Review]

Robots & Angels [Official | Facebook | Twitter] @ Blue Cafe

Robots & Angels returned to the Underground of Blue Cafe for another night of quality music. But on this night the focus was shifted on not so much the traditional band but more of the contemporary producer and lyricist. Having two of the residents from the hallowed Low End Theory come down to Long Beach was surely a treat. DJ Nobody and MC Nocando both talented artists on their own right combined like Goku and Vegeta to form Bomb Zombies. We were also treated by bass bumping beat focused set by the locally based and internationally traveled Ableton sensei Thavius Beck. Unfortunately Jon Wayne was unable to perform due to illness but luckily for us 2mex was able to step in and fill the lyrical void. And to round off the night of beats emulating from computerized contraptions was Rahfee Zahkee...

Thavius Beck with his Golden Novation Launchpad

For those of you who may not be in tuned with the local chatter of producer heads and music nerds, Thavius Beck is a skillfully certified Ableton Live instructor who not only works as an official teacher for Ableton but for the New York based school Dubspot. He offers a monthly series of FREE Ableton classes in downtown LA and is known for his laidback, entertaining, and informative classroom setting. So for him to come down and perform in my backyard was something I wouldn't of missed.

He performed a groovy bass beating low end thumping and electrifying set. Complete with the dance moves to show the various levels of movement one can achieve through the mastery of beat creation. At times the ease and control of his tools reminded of the fluidity in Dr. J. Or maybe it's just his hair. Either way it was a treat to see him outside of his class room setting.

2mex with Thavius Beck

Thavius said it best when he described 2mex as, "A gentleman and a scholar." He was very gracious and warmhearted when I introduced myself. We exchanged words and I thanked him for coming down to Long Beach to perform last minute. He had arranged to free style over Thavius' tracks and let his thoughts run continuously through his words. As much as I'd like to try to describe what I experienced I think it would be best to just view the clip above.

Bomb Zombies [DJ Nobody & MC Nocando]

The best way I can summarize Bomb Zombies performance is that it's what you get when you let two musically inclined good friends have their way on stage with two microphones, one laptop, and a soundcard. The result is a purely entertaining set of beats, fun, rhymes, and more fun. For those of you in need of some fun at home be sure to pick up a copy of their debut EP titled, Sincerely Yours (Hellfyre Club) [Purchase @ iTunes | Beatport | Boomkat] out now.
