SMOG presents: Rustie @ SMOG Sundays 5/20/12 [Concert Review]

SMOG presents: Rustie [Warp Records] @ SMOG Sundays//Dim Mak Studios

Big ups and many thanks to Drew and everyone w/ the SMOG crew for their continued support + hospitality. By far some of the easiest + coolest cats to work with. We made the trek up to hollyhood on holiest of days, the Sabbath. For some it's a day of rest and for those like us it's a day to absorb and experience new music. We brought along our fellow alien artist travelers, Bass Commander + T'Challa Lee from the band Z, along with us so they too could experience this form of Bass music first hand...

Right as we made the walk up the graffiti filled flight of stairs the bass was rumbling beneath our feet. I had to turn back to make sure Bass Commander + T'Challa Lee were okay as they looked at each other with that look of, "Where the hell are they taking us?!" Everyone gathered around the bar bobbed their head with the beat of the bass while waiting to get their liquids on. The bass drew us closer to the stage and as we made our way as Pawn [SMOG] was closing an amazing Dubstep set by switching gears and playing tracks that lay the groundwork for a perfect transition to Rustie.

Rustie started off his set with an intro track that felt like the load in screen for The Legend of Zelda. As the anticipation grew those hungry for what I like to call the evolution of Video Game Bass music, those in front hooted and hollered for Rustie to fully go in. Being that it was the first time I had seen him, I noticed right away at how patient he is as a DJ. Setting a proper pace from the beginning and building an overall vibe of the night is something that you don't get to see very often. He played a handful of my favorites off of his latest release, Glass Swords [Purchase @ itunes|Amazon|Bleep. Tracks like Globes, Flash Back, and Cry Flames made us feel like the Tri Force was upon us in the form of the lower level bass frequencies. He even played a favorite of mine from the Sunburst EP, Hyperthrust. Overall he mixed seamlessly between his own productions + more Trap / Juke type tracks + additional hip hop flare to showcase his skills on the wheels of steel. If you've heard his recent Essential Mix you were familiar with most of the tracks he shared with us that evening. Hearing Danny Brown's song Witit was the cherry on top of the chocolate fudge Sunday for me. The set went on and we were brought to Hyrule and back with the accompaniment of Rustie's perfect SMOG Sunday soundtrack.
