Last Sunday, June 17, Goth-Trad played out a massive set at SMOG Sundays to a very eager and bass-hungry crowd. His performance at SMOG Sundays in Hollywood at Dim Mak Studios was one of his stops for his west coast tour of the US. For those of you who haven’t heard of Goth-Trad, he’s a Japanese dubstep producer who has had several releases out on Mala’s highly respected bass music label Deep Medi Musik. Goth-Trad’s latest release was his LP New Epoch on Deep Medi Musik, which is essentially a very minimalistic yet deep and substantial album that embodies the Deep Medi vibe. He also made an appearance on Bassweight, a documentary about the origins and rise of dubstep that I would highly recommend viewing if you want to know what dubstep is really all about.

I arrived at the venue with Nativity and Eccentric right as EshOne was finishing up his set, which I really enjoyed because he properly set the mood with the deep and dark bass tracks for Goth-Trad, who was eagerly waiting on the side of the stage for his time to step onto the decks. The Funktion One sound system in the venue was just amazing – the bass coming out of it quite literally moved you. The visuals were also breathtaking – there were TV sets in front of the DJ booth and a projection behind the DJ of random glitchy images and videos that really suited the vibe of the evening. As soon as EshOne wrapped up his set, MC Kemst got the crowd to make some noise for Goth-Trad as he stepped on stage in front of the excited Los Angeles crowd.

Goth-Trad started his set off with “Strangers” off New Epoch and gradually built his set with deep and dark dubstep rollers. Goth-Trad’s mixing wasn’t particularly quick or heavily reliant on huge drops, and I felt that was what made his performance mindblowing and entrancing. He played out a lot of the tracks and did really subtle double drops that kept the crowd moving and asking for more. There was so much energy and so many good vibes in the crowd when Goth-Trad was playing. You could definitely tell that the people who were there that evening were there because they knew who Goth-Trad was and/or because they love and support the deeper and darker styles of bass music that SMOG has been offering recently. Among the people Nativity, Eccentric, and I ran into, we saw SMOG co-founder Drew (big ups for bringing the deeper side of dubstep to LA!), 12th Planet, and DJ Fei-Fei amongst the crowd at the event! Goth-Trad’s set overall was one that left a lasting impression on the LA bass music crowd. After his set, I could hear the many people approaching him outside asking him when he would be coming back to LA. Goth-Trad’s performance was definitely a breath of fresh air amongst many of the dubstep events that I have attended so far this year and I really look forward to seeing him again if he ever does another gig in or around the Los Angeles area.

With all that said, I’m pretty sure that the LA bass music community has been pleased with the artists that SMOG has been bringing in for their events, from mainstream artists like Skream and Benga to lesser-known artists like Goth-Trad. I’m also pretty sure that the bass heads already know and are extremely excited for next month’s highly anticipated SMOG Sundays event with the legendary dubstep duo Digital Mystikz aka Coki and Deep Medi Musik founder Mala. The event lands on July 15th, is now 18 and over, and has moved from Dim Mak Studios in Hollywoood to Los Globos, which is a little closer to downtown LA than Dim Mak Studios. Make sure you hop on those tickets because this is going to be a huge event and I hope to see you all there!
