Legendary dubstep producer and DJ Rusko,
along with the infamous drum & bass DJ and RAM Records head honcho Andy
C, Sigma, and Fury brought an explosion of bass to
the Hollywood Palladium in
Hollywood, CA this past Friday, June 1st. The event was part of
Insomniac’s Bassrush Enhanced Concert
Series with the last one being the Bassrush vs. Circus event which featured
most of the Circus Records roster – Doctor P, Flux Pavilion, Funtcase, Cookie
Monsta, and Brown & Gammon.
I arrived at the Palladium near the middle of Sigma’s set, and I already knew that I was in for a pleasant
surprise. I enjoyed what I was hearing Sigma drop as I was getting myself
oriented at the venue (aka getting drinks at the bar and soaking in the energy
of the crowd). Sigma’s set (at least, what part of it I heard) in my opinion
represented a good median between the hard hitting drum & bass that I knew
Andy C would drop and Rusko’s barrage of dubstep and bass music bangers.
Following Sigma was Andy C,
who was unfortunately unable to do his ‘Alive’ set that I was fortunate enough
to witness at Beyond Wonderland not too long ago. However, to make up for that,
‘The Executioner’ just went harder with his set, playing out an hour of drum
& bass and killing it with each track that he flawlessly mixed in and out
of. By the time Andy C took the stage, the Palladium floor was getting filled
and the energy from Sigma’s set right before just kept rising. I was definitely
pleased that Andy C dropped Dub Phizix’s “Marka”, which is a track I have
definitely been rinsing out in my DJ sets for a while now.
After Andy C came Rusko, the
man that I’m pretty sure at least half of the crowd showed up to see, stepped
onto a very elevated and well-lit stage. His stage set up was definitely a
sight to see, with his name in big, bright lights in the background, each
letter moving according to the music that Rusko was playing. This was Rusko’s
last stop for his most recent tour across North America, and it was definitely
a very energetic and welcoming homecoming for him. Being the crazy person he
is, Rusko went all out with his set, running and jumping around the stage and
showcasing his wild dance moves that pumped up the crowd. He played most of the
tracks off his latest album Songs and
a ton of chest rattling bass bangers throughout the evening, going from dubstep
to drum & bass to moombahton, even ending his extremely energetic set with
a 160BPM juke/footwork track (Lenkemz’ remix of Traxman’s “Blow Yo Shit”) that
was so raw and dirty, I’m sure everyone in the Palladium couldn’t help but
notice the topless woman in the middle of the crowd as Rusko went bananas as he
was walking off stage. While Rusko played a lot of his remixes from the past
years, “Jahova” was noticeably absent from his set list. I would have loved to
see Rusko played some of his older originals (he did play the original and
Buraka Som Sistema remix of “Cockney Thug” though!). But for what it’s worth, I
still enjoyed his very explosive performance.
Overall, everyone who played did a great job and the crowd had a
feel-good vibe that made the concert very enjoyable. Whoever did the lights for
the evening was feeling the music, and that definitely contributed to the
energy that was very apparent that evening in the Palladium. The sound was
excellent too; the bass could be heard blocks away from the venue and for
anyone inside, the bass surrounded their bodies, inside and out. For those
going to the Electric Daisy Carnival this coming weekend in Las Vegas, this
concert should serve as a warm up for the upcoming Bassrush Massive on Thursday
as well as the bassPOD stage at EDC the whole weekend. So bass heads, be
prepared for a whole weekend of bass madness in the desert, and see you all
there!
