Paving The Way To Paid Dues 2012 - Self Scientific [Music Video + Tickets On-Sale]

Self Scientific: Bandcamp.
Chace Infinite: Official. Twitter. DJ Khalil: Official. Twitter.

Salute, Salutary, Salutations, Welcome to the 6th Edition of our series; Paving The Way to Paid Dues. For this edition we highlight artists who are the testament that, Good Things are Always Worth the Wait. The DJ and MCee Duo of Self Scientific have been grinding in the game since the 90's and to this day still persevere to be one of the hallmarks of underground hip hop heads everywhere. As stated in my previous posts, music, hip hop will forever be an evolutionary thing, where it will change and move with the time however Self-Scientific has always produced work from the Glory Days of progressive hip hop. I don't mean hip hop joints that have electro or house infused into them, I'm talking about the grimey, gritty, passion filled hip hop that was birthed in the late 80's early 90's and fought it's way to come up. Unlike most DJ and MCee duo's, both DJ Khlil and Chace Infinite have equal and even representation on their work, both entities combine to make music that both hits hard lyrically and musically, a delicate balance that many DJ's and MCee's have yet to master. Throughout the years Self Scientific has successfully fought against the mainstream, and have continued to make music for the people and not for the simple pursuit of the almighty dollar. Even in the work they have produced previously Infinite has always mentioned the dissolution of Hip Hop culture through monetary gain.

Talib Kweli - Distractions [Music Video + Tour Dates]

Talib Kweli: Official

More good news. Talib Kweli is coming out with a new album this year called Prisoner of Conscious. Check out the video for the first single, "Distractions" produced by Oh No. I love how Talib always has something substantial to rhyme about. This song shows that he is well aware of today's issues and I believe he is encouraging you to get in the know too and not be so distracted. Visit Talib's Facebook for a Free Download of distractions. Also Check out the message from Talib below and upcoming tour dates.

JazzReggae Festival 2011 - Jam Day [Concert Review]

The 25th Annual JazzReggae Festival at UCLA: Official | Facebook | Twitter

A week has passed and enough time has gone by to allow all the memories of a great memorial day weekend to sink deep into the cavities and secret back doors of the mind's infinite hallways. School is out for most, if not all and the weather was perfect for an afternoon of sun + music + fun. Before we get into the actual festival let's back track and explain how we got there: After repeated unanswered attempts [lost track of how many e-mails] fate would smile down upon us the weekend before the event when we met Cole and his fellow Bruins of JazzReggae Fest post interview with TruthSeekers [Shout out Santana & Crew!]. Brief introduction + exchange of contacts + a handful more e-mails = green light for Dank Radio to review the event. [Shout out to John for being instrumental in the final process] (I'm sharing this info to you all so you can get a picture of how these things work. If you have questions please ask. I'd be more than happy to explain the process.)

JazzReggae Festival 2011 [Documentary + Line Up]

The 25th Annual JazzReggae Festival at UCLA: Official | Tickets

Despite all the parties, clubs, concerts, etc. we tend to frequent, we here at Dank Radio love community events. For the people, by the people. So we're delightfully surprised that we were sent the documentary below celebrating the 25th Annual JazzReggae Festival at UCLA. We had so many questions about how the event came about and who was responsible for organizing it. This was THE perfect way to answer all of our questions. Not to mention give a voice to the people behind the scenes and have them explain what the JazzReggae Fest means to them. If you look closely you can see L from Truth Seekers Radio make an appearance [Shout out to Santana and the whole crew]. Without any further ado here's the documentary along with a few words to summarize the whole thing. Below you will also find a selection of artists that you may or may not know but you should definitely check out.

MED - Bang Ya Head III: Part 2

NEW MUSIC from MED including some production by Madlib, HouseShoes, Exile, and more. Perfect for chillin, burning, and of course, bangin' ya head!! Did I mention it's all FREE?! All MED asks is you leave a comment & smoke a blunt if you cross paths when he's on tour. Sounds like a deal to me! Big ups to Havana Joe for giving us the heads up.

Also, check out the new single "Where I'm From" featuring Aloe Blacc & Talib Kweli..

Reflection Eternal - Revolutions Per Minute

I've had this album since the day it dropped way back in May but Cosmogramma turned my brain into slush so I never got into it until now. This album is really really dope, one of the best hip hop albums out this year. Hi-Tek's production is always evolving and changing not letting himself get pigeon holed to any particular style. I always scratched my head about his decision to move toInterscope as a in-house prodcer for Aftermath but hearing how clean his beats are especially when you put headphones on, not to mention how much it bangs at their shows. Tek is always finding his way back into my top 10 producers list. Talib's rhymes are always on point but there's a certain chemistry he has with Tek he just sounds perfect over his beats. The funny thing is this album is nothing like the 1st Reflection Eternal album which is not a bad thing at all. This album isn't a sequel its its own movie. A documentary showing the revolution and evolution of hip-hop from the heart. Individually they always supply you with great music but together they're just on a whole other level, definitely one of the elite duos in music. Check out the video for Ballad of the Black Gold below (side note Tek made the beat on election night after Pres Obama won) and the download of Just Begun (BlackStar plus J. Cole and Jay Electronica) at the bottom. Go buy this album [itunes / amazon] and support good music.
