LA Weekly presents: Hipsters Heart Hip Hop - 1 Year Anniversary [Feature Interview]

Hipsters Heart Hip Hop : Official | Facebook

The following Feature Interview has to be the easiest + fastest I ever went from meeting an event organizer to getting the feature published. As lady luck on my side I met Adam Weiss aka AdamantiumMC|Dirty Daddy this past weekend during the Truth Seekers program right before Dank Radio broadcasted live on air. I'm pretty sure I set a record for introducing myself + explaining who Dank Radio is + what we do for event organizers + agreeing upon a type of Feature + exchanging contact information. It took all of 2 minutes for this to happen while the whole time I was mentally prepping for our In-Studio guest and the uncertainty of what songs to play during our show.

Enough back story. Below you will learn about Hipster Heart Hip Hop from one of it's founders and what it will evolve into. Not only that, but you'll discover how luck comes into play when locking down some of the most talented artists in the current Hip Hop|Beat scene. You'll also find a special mix by DJ Stereotype comprised of music from all the artists performing...

Nativity: First off thank you for taking time to do the interview and congratulations on the 1 year anniversary of Hipsters Heart Hip Hop. I know it's a few days before the big event and you must be busy as hell trying to wrap up last minute details. Before we begin please introduce yourself. What is your role with Hipsters Heart Hip Hop? How did Hipsters Heart Hip Hop begin and what kind of event/party/experience do you present?

AdamantiumMC: Swag. thanks man. I'm Adam Weiss aka AdamantiumMC (when I pretend to be a rapper) aka Dirty Daddy (thats just what I make my bitches call me. swag!). My role in Hipsters Heart Hip Hop is booking the talent, booking the venue, negotating with the artist and the venue, promoting the show, pretty much everything. But I couldnt do it without my partner DJ Stereotype and all the other homies that help put in work...Ruben Chavez, Romo, Chris Sanchez, Jayk Gallagher, J-Mart, all the supporters and homies. We did our first show March 20th of last year. Basically I had been going to hella indie and noise band shows and dug the atmosphere. How they were always wild as fuck, DIY, all ages, byob, underage kids gettin fucked up, 5 dollar shows at art galleries spaces, super intimate and interactive...rap shows werent like that. So pretty much I just wanted to bring that element to rap shows. Thats why we called it "Hipsters Heart Hip Hop" because we'd throw these rap shows in hipster ass art spaces in Echo Park where you would normally see a noise band or an inde band. Also, we would invite different indie bands to come play an instrumental set and we'd freestyle over it, thats how we would close out the night

But after the show tomorrow 6/23 we are killing the name "Hipsters Heart Hip Hop" and changing it to "Ham On Everything", The hipster thing kind of pigeon holds us. Plus we have now progressed past just doing underground rap shows in art spaces. Now we have a bi monthly night called "swag it out" at the Short Stop. We are doing a new party at the Standard along with Zakmatik and the Traphouse July 10th, and just have tons of more things in store that are alot less "rappy" then our HHHH shows and dont really fir the mold of "hipsters hearting hip hop". But regardless of what we do, its on some buck wild party shit. we go ham, hence HAM ON EVERYTHING!!

Nativity: That all explains it. You know I always tell my friends down here in Long Beach that all hipsters are closet Hip Hop Heads. I've already lost track of how many house parties I've been to where they're straight rockin' 80's + 90's classics. What was the Hip Hop track that you first heard? Or rather the first song that really struck a chord with you?

AdamantiumMC: Well I was a Hip Hop Head waaaaay before the term hipster probably exsisted. I have a brother thats 7 years older then me so in the 80s he was into Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, Posion, Ratt, Cinderella. So I pretty much followed suite until I heard Licence to Ill by the Beastie Boys. When I heard that tape, I realized I had found MY music. Shortly there after I discovered gangster rap...nwa, ice t, cmw,..and that stuff is what REALLY struck a chord with me

Nativity: What are your top 3 favorite albums? Think of it this way, if the rapture was about to happen and you only had time to spin three more records what would you choose?

AdamantiumMC: Ice Cube's "Death Certificate", Modest Mouse's "This is a Long Drive...", and probably Juicy J / Lex Luger's Rubba Band Business 2 (only because for the last few weeks now I cant go a day without listening to it)

Nativity: Favorite Dilla track and why?

AdamantiumMC: The Slum Village Fall In Love track always does something weird to me

Nativity: Back to the HHHH event. I see you've assembled such a heavyweight lineup from the rapidly growing LA beat scene. How did you go about locking down all these artists? Chris/Free The Robots is usually busy with his restaurant or touring the country. While you have Nocando busy with his Low End Duties and his growing Hellfyre Club Label. I know Thavius Beck is always busy with his Albeton/Dubspot courses and he's gearing up for an upcoming European tour. Was it a challenge to get all of them to agree to perform? Were these the artists you've always wanted for the 1st anniversary?

AdamantiumMC: Ive always been really lucky with booking. I mean ive forged alot of relationships with artist the last year probably because im not a greedy promotor. Im really not throwing events to make money, Its more important to me that the artist get paid. I'm just tryin to stunt for females and have a good time...I guess im just a fair ass dude and cats notice it and probably respect it so they fuck with me. Although alot of times, like with Free The Robots, I just asked haha and they said yes. dumb luck. And the line up is mostly all acts I wanted to fuck with for the one year,...really this line up changed so many times. I really didnt intend on this show being so beat heavy. Originally I wanted to do a mixture of beat dudes I was really feeling and swagged out rappers I was into...but someone this line up evolved into this. Im not mad at it though. I think its perfect

Nativity: You might of touched on this before but I still have to ask, where do you see HHHH in the following year? 3 years? 5 years?

AdamantiumMC: Well like I said they'll be no more HHHH it will be Ham On Everything and we'll be killin shit. Throwing massive parties. Think Brent Bolthouse but with more swag and less douchey hollywood pretension

Nativity: Will you continue to focus on more producers, MCs, DJs for future events?

AdamantiumMC: We def are straying away from throwing underground rap shows at gallery spaces like how we started, and we are also straying away from throwing shows at traditional venues (like tomorrows show). We wanna throw events/parties at places like the standard rooftop, la cita, freakcity, broadway bar, paul & andres...stuff like that. And although, well at least for the summer, we are focusing on a more fun dance party vibe, it will still have a heavy hip hop/beat/dj element.

Nativity: I see. So has there been any hip hop bands that have approached you to perform?

AdamantiumMC: Yeah alot of dope hip hop artist have asked us to perform or to throw shows for them. Really Ceschi Ramos or Fake Four Records (who is one of the most talented dudes ive EVER come across) swagged us out. He fucked with us after we had only thrown two shows and had us throw two shows for his label. And after that kept throwing dope artist our way and giving artist our numbers/email address. Serious shout outs to Ceschi Ramos. I'm pretty sure without him we wouldnt be where we are.

Nativity: What's the best way to contact you if someone feels that they have what it takes to perform at a future HHHH event?

AdamantiumMC: Best way to conact us to play at HHHH / Ham on Everything is to just hit us up on facebook,..but really when it comes to events we have a pretty clear idea of what and who we want for it

Nativity: Thanks again for doing the interview! Is there anything else you'd like to share with your fans + friends + supporters? Maybe a hint as to who the Special Guest performer is?

AdamantiumMC: Yeah mane, super stoked to see everyone tonight. Come fuck with us at the Short Stop in Echo Park every 1st and 3rd Thursday for "Swag It Out" with DJ Nobody, DJ Rockwell, DJ Stereotype, Alf Alpha and special guest. This weekend we'll be releasing more info about our july 10th standard rooftop party. shits gonna be insane. Shouts out to Daddy Kev and Sean Carlson, those dudes are probably the biggest inspiration to me. And shouts out to all our crew...soundwavs, neckbreaers, CCC, Team Link, dirtRAID, Gutter Trunk, all area crews. and the special guest are RAS G and NINJASONIK. POW
