Salute, Salutary, Salutations, Welcome to the 6th Edition of our series; Paving The Way to Paid Dues. For this edition we highlight artists who are the testament that, Good Things are Always Worth the Wait. The DJ and MCee Duo of Self Scientific have been grinding in the game since the 90's and to this day still persevere to be one of the hallmarks of underground hip hop heads everywhere. As stated in my previous posts, music, hip hop will forever be an evolutionary thing, where it will change and move with the time however Self-Scientific has always produced work from the Glory Days of progressive hip hop. I don't mean hip hop joints that have electro or house infused into them, I'm talking about the grimey, gritty, passion filled hip hop that was birthed in the late 80's early 90's and fought it's way to come up. Unlike most DJ and MCee duo's, both DJ Khlil and Chace Infinite have equal and even representation on their work, both entities combine to make music that both hits hard lyrically and musically, a delicate balance that many DJ's and MCee's have yet to master. Throughout the years Self Scientific has successfully fought against the mainstream, and have continued to make music for the people and not for the simple pursuit of the almighty dollar. Even in the work they have produced previously Infinite has always mentioned the dissolution of Hip Hop culture through monetary gain.



Although these two have rightfully taken their place in hip hop's golden era, their music and raps still proves to be just as real, relevant, and applicable as it was when it first came out. In recent years after a considerable hiatus Self Scientific has reconvened to release the "Trials of The Blackhearted EP" just last year. Chace Infinite and the Grammy award winning DJ Khalil have collaborated with like souls and minds such as Talib Kweli, B.I.G K.R.I.T, Freddie Gibs, The New Royales, Timothy Bloom, Krondon, and The Game, to create the EP that illustrates for the world the systemic disarray and bewilderment that we as a society must endure. According to Infinite's website,

"In Ancient Kemet, they believed the heart was the organ that controlled thought, logic, and knowledge. The weight of the heart, against a feather, was used to determine if people were righteous or wicked during their time on earth. If their heart was heavier than the feather, the Heart was devoured. With the world rapidly changing, and evolving beyond recognition, people are becoming even more desensitized to the conditions we exist in. The most heinous acts are applauded as "interesting" and "entertaining" while genuine acts of love, and justice are shunned. We can sensationalize be we are scared of true emotion, we have more information now than ever before but no one wants to read. The truth is scary, it is easier to escape through our favorite vice, than to deal with the harsh reality of the present.

Self Scientific have had their dues paid for quite sometime now, and with their upcoming performance at Paid Dues i along with the thousands of other Paid Dues participants get the privilege of seeing, hearing, and feeling Hip Hop at it's finest. Although some cuts may have dropped in the late 90's i can guarantee every verse every bar every beat will still hit you in the chest like it was a track that dropped yesterday. Although staying relevant is key in the game, glory and fame isn't what these two are after. They both know the power of strategically placed  music and words; how when those two things harmonize with one another wields more power than meets the eye. They understand that dynamic intimately and use it to create music for the people, to uplift their souls, to lament on the losses and injustices of life, and bring to light the issues so many people face day to day, and still so many others fear addressing.  It is said that in order to truly understand the world around us, one must first know thy self first and foremost. Self Scientific unapologetically brings consciousness and cognizance to the table, each track deliberate and purposeful. After you're done listening to one track it's hard not to walk away without a better understanding of self or the world around us.  Self Scientific have engrained themselves in the golden era of Hip Hop in our headphones, stereos, ears and thoughts and with an opportunity to see these two great minds at their do it all again this weekend, it will surely a disappointment to be missed.
