Electric Daisy Carnival 2010 Lineup

The lineup for this years Electric Daisy Carnival Los Angeles has been released and so far it's looking pretty good. Jack Beats had the date on their myspace page as far back as January while Laidback Luke confirmed he was performing on his twitter page not too long ago. Kaskade has also shared through his Facebook page his excitement for the upcoming 2 Day event. And for those of you who complained last year that there was just way too many people on Saturday, it's been reported that they'll be expanding the grounds. "This year there's a lot more ground," said Rotella. "We've had the same basic layout for the past three years, but this time there's a bigger footprint. We'll have two main stages -- an A Stage and a B stage -- and are using a lot of area that we haven't used before. Last year was a little too crowded on Saturday -- Friday was perfect. I don't like it when people are bumping elbows the whole time. With this new footprint, people will be able to breathe." [via] Purchase tickets here.

M.I.A. - Born Free Video NSFW

Director : Romain Gavras
Director of Photography : André Chemetoff
Producer : Mourad Belkeddar
Production company : elnino.tv
Executive Production : Gaetan Rousseau / Paradoxal
Special thanks to Lana & Melissa from The Director's Bureau

As you can see from the video M.I.A. is making a clear statement against injustices committed around the globe. She has been pretty outspoken about her thoughts on her native country of Sri Lanka and explains how "music now should be like a sonic message. You want to really feel it, internally. The police use sound cannons at public protests that explode people’s inside with a single note - human beings have to come up with the opposite of that." [via] For the curious locals, half of the video is shot in Los Angeles around the warehouse district by the 101 Freeway.

For all the producer heads/music nerds a clearer picture of how the track came to by was provided by Diplo's Mad Deccent site:

"It was a royal mess of all our good buds- Switch, John Hill, and Diplo plus Iggor Cavalera (1/2 Mixhell, ex-Sepultura)! All those dudes in a room, a generous sample of Suicide, sick sick drumming from Iggor (and here's another tidbit for u - it was recorded on POPO's shitty ass drumset at the mausoleum!) --- and you got it."

James Blake - CMYK

James Blake - CMYK EP out May 31st [R&S Records]
1. CMYK
2. Footnotes
3. I'll Stay
4. Postpone

Wow. That's all I could say the first time I let CMYK by James Blake play out. Major thank you to Diplo for tweeting about this. (I'm not going to take credit for finding this, no sir.) Anyway, what's not to like about this track? the creative use of samples? the soulful groove? the thick synth lines? If you're looking something along the lines of FlyLo to groove to, then look no further. I don't know what they're feeding these creative minds on the other side of the pond but whatever it is please give them some more.

Rifoki - Zombie Attack

Video directed by: K.J. Palkiewicz

Steve Aoki [Dim Mak] and Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo [The Bloody Beetroots] combine forces to explode in a hardcore frenzy called Rifoki. The first time I heard the song Zombie Attack I couldn't help but smile at the thought of mosh pits, overdriven strats, and broken cymbals. I look forward to witnessing the first performance at their sold out show at the Palladium this Saturday. It'll be interesting to see how the kids accustomed to hearing 4/4 dance rhythms adjust to the pulsating screams.

Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar

Video for Aloe Blacc's single "I Need A Dollar" from the forthcoming album Good Things
Video Produced by What Matters Most and Funk Factory Films
Photography: Matthew J.Lloyd
Director: Kahlil Joseph

Some of my friends know of my recent liking to a new HBO show called How To Make It In America. In short, it follows the lives of two guys in their mid/late 20s trying to make something of themselves in one of the toughest cities to hustle. Whatever your thoughts are on the actual authenticity of the characters portrayed, you have to give it to them, it's a challenge to get your sh(*)t together in life.

In addition to getting your life in order, a majority of my fellow Americans (myself included), are apart of the growing status of unemployment. With my savings shrinking and lack of jobs growing, the importance of getting that dollar bill grows more and more each day. Aloe Blacc has managed to summarize the thoughts and emotion behind this predicament with great accuracy.

"I had a job but the boss man let me go. He said
I'm sorry but I won't be needing your help no more. I said
Please mister boss man I need this job more than you know
But he gave me my last paycheck and he sent me on out the door"

I applaud HBO for picking the perfect song to describe the show and the current state of people across the world. My hats off to Aloe Blacc for capturing this moment in time. Word on the street is that he's hiding somewhere in Long Beach. If I ever run into him, I'd be more than happy to scrounge up a handful of quarters, walk over to Eddie's Liquor store, and buy him a MadDog as a kind gesture of gratitude.

The Electro Wars

Not too long ago I remember the heated debate about vinyl versus mp3s. I remember going to the club scratching my head wondering why this dude was only showing up with a messenger bag with his headphones, two fake records, and a macbook. I would talk amongst my DJ friends and ask them "What's the deal? You guys got tired of hauling milk crates to and from the venues?" They would then laugh and I'd explain, "I remember when I had to carry crates up 4 flights of stairs just so my cousin would give me a 10 min. slot at this party.(That was about 10 years ago)" People still discuss that same issue but these days it's more so about Serato VS. Traktor VS. Ableton.

Another burning topic has surfaced and this time it's about the music. The Electro Wars is the title of this battle and a recently debuted documentary by Stephen Alex Vasquez. Stephen with his partner in crime, Carmine Rizzo explore this new/old front of electronic dance music with the help of A-Trak, Dave-1, DJ Premier, Lil Jon, Ninjasonik, Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke, Diplo, Q-Bert and more. They cover the emergence of bedroom producers, to the popularity game of blogs and blog aggregators, and the evolution/transition of former Hip Hop heavy weights into present day kings of Electro.

They have yet to announce a premier for Los Angeles but rest assured, you'll know, when we know.

Guilty Simpson + Madlib = OJ Simpson

Guilty Simpson + Madlib = OJ Simpson. Album drops May 18.
Advance digital sale available now, exclusively at stonesthrow.com

OJ Simpson. That’s the name of the album. No bloody gloves. No Ford Broncos. These are some 12 hard-hitting hip-hop tracks featuring Guilty’s inimitable baritone, and an equal number of Madlib’s signature album-as-soundtrack/radio/sideshow arrangements, where the beat & sequence is as important as the rap. This, with a couple no-nonsense guest appearances, some cuts by J.Rocc, and a whole bunch of attitude, makes up one of our favorite projects in a while.

The charisma that Detroit’s heavy hitting MC Guilty Simpson and the Los Angeles based Beat Konducta Madlib share testifies to a musical kinship that is rare in today’s rapper-as-an-accessory marketplace. Going back to Guilty’s first appearance on wax (Jaylib’s “Strapped”–2003), Guilty over a Madlib beat to us is like hearing Guru over Premier circa
Daily Operation, or CL over Pete around the time of “Straighten It Out.” Some times, a rapper and a producer just work well together.

Concert Review: Kill The Noise & Treasure Fingers

@ Into The Am|v20 4/8/2010
I understand this review is long overdue. Quite frankly it's almost 2 weeks since I attended this show. But hey, in my defense I had my very first Coachella to prep for(more on that event in an upcoming post). It's better late than never. So let's begin shall we...

So in typical local Long Beach fashion I arrive on my time frame and accidentally miscalculate the factors of spring break, grand prix season, and 18+ teenagers hungry to get their club experience going. Having to wait in any line in Long Beach especially for a club I used to frequent 4 years earlier is enough to make any local turn around and leave but I stayed true to my resolve, "all for the love of music." After a brief 45min. wait in line I managed to walk in right as Kill The Noise was murdering the crowd with Daft Punk - One More Time. Everyone was getting down with their moves when all of a sudden KTN drops Project Bassline - Drop The Pressure (Jack Beats Remix). I don't know about you but whenever I hear the wobble of a Jack Beats track I just have to move and dance. Before I got carried away I managed to snap a quick photo of everyone throwing their hands in the air right before the drop. And with that burst of musical energy I soon realized that KTN's set was soon to be over as Treasure Fingers was setting up his gear. [Self note: Show up early for KTN]

Right from Treasure Fingers' first track the crowd jumped into a funky dance fever. The kids up in front waving their hands in the air, the couples by the railing were getting their grind on, and last but not least the groups to the side grooving to their distinct shuffle styles. The only song I can clearly recall is his remix of Classixx - I'll Get You. I see why TF is with Fool's Gold and is sponsored by the likes of Native Instruments, Moog, and Traktor Pro. Once he gets you going you can't help but dance all night long.
